NIMC issues new guidelines for NIN enrolment

The new guidelines, which take effect on Dec 30, 2020, have taken into consideration measures to curtail the spread of COVID-19

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has released new guidelines for the enrollment of the National Identity Number.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the commission’s spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke, on Tuesday.

The statement said the commission had adopted a couple of measures to contain the spread of the virus whilst ensuring its services to Nigerians are not entirely interrupted.

The Nigerian government had ordered telecommunication operators to block numbers without NIN.

The order generated a huge demand for the NIN with a large crowd visiting the NIMC Enrolment Centers nationwide.

According to the statement, the guidelines take effect from December 30, 2020.

It said attending to applicants would be based on Booking System. For Bookings, applicants are to visit any of the NIMC Offices closest to them during stipulated business hours (9 am – 1 pm).

Although, the policy has been in place since February 4, 2020, applicants are now crowding all the centers.

It informed that personal information would be collected for the sole purpose of scheduling an enrolment appointment, urging subscribers not to include any personal information other than what is required by the booking register.

“Mindful of the second wave of the COVID-19 which continues to severely affect public health and cause unprecedented disruptions, the Commission wishes to announce that it has adopted a couple of measures to contain the spread of the virus whilst ensuring its services to Nigerians are not entirely interrupted.

“Effective December 30, 2020, attending to applicants would be based on Booking System. For Bookings, applicants are to visit any of the NIMC Offices closest to them during stipulated business hours (9 am – 1 pm). Although the policy has been in place since 4th February 2020 applicants are now crowding all the centers.

“Personal Information would be collected for the sole purpose of scheduling an enrolment appointment. Please do not include any personal information other than what is required by the booking register.

“Once admitted into the office, a Number-Issuing queue management system will be in place to ensure orderliness and strict adherence to Covid-19 Protocols.”

“As a responsible Commission we fully understand that safety comes first, as such, only individuals with facemask would be allowed entrance into our premises.”

Obey government directives on crossover services – CAN President urges churches nationwide

The Christian leadership in Nigeria has directed worship centres to respect governments’ directives on New Year crossover services.

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev Samson Ayokunle, in a statement issued on Tuesday evening, said CAN understands the unfortunate state the coronavirus pandemic has put everybody worldwide.

The association appealed to churches to strictly adhere to COVID-19 protocols and guidelines issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), federal and state governments.

“This caused some state governments to place a total ban on crossover night service and we are not happy that we would not be able to enter into the New Year prayerfully in joint fellowship with our brothers and sisters.

“We, however, urge you all to abide by the directives of each state government on this so as to prevent the spread of the infection.

“There is no sacrifice that is too much in order to put an end to the pandemic once and for all. One thing that is certain is that the end of COVID-19 is here at last in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ.”

CAN also advised that in states where the government has placed an embargo on the crossover services, churches may meet earlier to praise God for the gift of life despite the global crisis and place their requests for 2021.

Ayokunle added that in such states, services should end by 11:00pm at most to enable worshippers to return home on time.

“It is a passing phase and this too shall pass away in Jesus Name. Very soon, the pandemic will become history and we will return to our usual routine services in Jesus Name.”

He advised state governments to continuously relate with CAN leadership in their states for understanding and support of their directives.

“We are partners in progress and development of the country. We also call on local government authorities to enforce the COVID-19 protocols in our markets and in the transport sector”, his statement added.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that a “super gonorrhea” is spreading fast due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The agency says the disease is spreading due to actual antibiotic overuse for those infected with the novel coronavirus.

The agency also states the sexually transmitted infection (STI) may become even more resistant to the recommended treatments like azithromycin, which typically is used for chest and sinus infections. Azithromycin has seen an increase in usage during the pandemic.

"Such a situation can fuel the emergence of resistance in gonorrhea including gonorrhea superbug (super gonorrhea) or gonorrhea with high-level resistance to current antibiotics recommended to treat it," a WHO spokesperson told British media outlet The Sun.

The new strain does not respond to the normal first-line treatments, making it even more dangerous and uncomfortable for those infected, according to the report.

Doctors and medical experts have long warned of the possibility that “superbugs” that are antibiotic-resistant could become more commonplace, and this is one example of such a thing happening.

The Agency also explained that the new strain is exploding is because most people aren’t going to the hospital unless they come down with COVID-19 symptoms. Instead, they’re self-medicating, a WHO spokesperson told The Sun, adding that the “super gonorrhea” is extremely resistant to antibiotics.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said cases of gonorrhea, which is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae, have increased 63 percent since 2014.

The US agency has also warned that this could "facilitate transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)." Not only this, it can also cause eye infections.

'We must eat what we produce''- President Buhari bars CBN from giving money to food importers

President Buhari has once again instructed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) not to provide foreign exchange for the importation of food items.

The President gave the directive at the fifth regular meeting with the presidential economic advisory council that held at the statehouse in Abuja today December 29.

A statement released by Garba Shehu, the president’s senior special assistant on media and publicity, quoted President Buhari as saying Nigerians must eat what is produced here.

“The CBN must not give money to import food. Already, about seven states are producing all the rice we need. We must eat what we produce. Going back to the land is the way out. We depend on petrol at the expense of agriculture. Now the oil industry is in turmoil. We are being squeezed to produce at 1.5 million barrels a day as against a capacity to produce 2.3 million. At the same time, the technical cost of our production per barrel is high, compared to the Middle East production

We will continue to encourage our people to go back to the land. Our elite is indoctrinated in the idea that we are rich in oil, leaving the land for the city for oil riches.

We are back to the land now. We must not lose the opportunity to make life easier for our people. Imagine what would have happened if we didn’t encourage agriculture and closed the borders. We would have been in trouble.”he said

This is the third time that the President would issue CBN the directive not to give food importers foreign exchange. The first time was in August 2019 and again in September 2020.

Benue Security council bans use of motorcycle in 3 LGs

The Benue State Security Council has on Tuesday banned the use of motorcycles in the Sankera area of the State following renewed and rising insecurity.

The security council also banned illegal revenue checkpoints in some parts of the axis.

Sankera axis comprises three local governments – Logo, Katsina-Alla and Ukum with Katsina-Alla as headquarters.

In a statement by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Internal Affairs and Special Services, Uyina Matthew, “The use of motorcycles is hereby banned in Katsina-Ala and Ukum Local Government Areas, till further notice.

“The use of tricycles also known as Keke and other means of transportation apart from motorcycles will be allowed in the two local government areas.

“Aside the revenue collection point at the head bridge in Katsina-Ala, no other revenue point is allowed within the local government area.

“All staff of the Board of Internal Revenue Service, BIRS are required to wear customized jackets and identity cards.

“Security agents are mandated to dismantle all illegal revenue collection points and makeshift shops.

In the same vein, loitering at Katsina-Ala head bridge is prohibited.

“Loading and offloading of vehicles at Takum Junction and Katsina-Ala head bridge has also been prohibited.”

Osun makes U-turn, permits cross-over services

Osun State Government has rescinded its earlier decision banning churches from holding cross-over services.

The state Commissioner for Information, Funke Egbemode, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

Egbemode, in the statement titled, ‘Covid-19: Osun gives fresh directives on Crossover Service’, said the government’s sensitivity to the mood of the season has necessitated a review of its earlier position.

“The Government of the State of Osun has decided to allow cross over religious gatherings, But any organisation holding cross over service must note that they are expected to close the service early and everyone must be off the streets by 1:00am.

“Security operatives have been given the directive to enforce this guideline. Religious bodies and citizens are therefore advised to comply because we do not want anyone to spend the first day of the year in police custody.

“Also, the leadership of religious bodies must ensure strict adherence to safety protocols, which include accommodating only 50 percent capacity of their normal attendance, ensuring social distancing, use of nose mask or face fields by participants, avoidance of sharing materials and instruments and avoidance of any other action that can help the virus to spread,” Egbemode said.

IMF: Nigeria Remains Largest Economy In Africa, 26th In The World

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that Nigeria maintained its lead as the biggest economy in Africa, in terms of the size of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

But globally, the IMF, in its recently released World Economic Outlook (WEO), reviewed by THISDAY yesterday, ranked Nigeria the 26th largest economy, with an average GDP of $442.976 billion.

The computation was based on nominal GDP, which does not take into account differences in the cost of living in different countries.

The IMF, recently returned a gloomy verdict on the Nigerian economy for 2020, declaring that the nation’s economic outlook was challenging.

The multilateral institution, in its recently released 2020 Article IV Consultation on Nigeria, had stated that the country’s economy “is buffeted” from side to side by a cocktail of issues, including the uncertainty over the COVID-19 pandemic, low oil prices, capital outflows and balance of payment challenges.”

The IMF had stated: “The COVID-19 global pandemic is exacting a heavy toll on the Nigerian economy, which was already experiencing falling per capita income and double-digit inflation, with limited buffers and structural bottlenecks.

“Low oil prices and sharp capital outflows have significantly increased balance of payments (BOP) pressures and, together with the pandemic-related lockdown, have led to a large output contraction and increased unemployment.”

In its estimation, the IMF said supply shortages have pushed up headline inflation to a 30-month high.

It said: “Under current policies, the outlook is challenging. Real GDP is projected to contract by 3¼ per cent in 2020. The recovery is projected to start in 2021, with subdued growth of 1½ per cent and output recovering to its pre-pandemic level only in 2022.”

The IMF report, which acknowledged the efforts of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to rein in inflation, however, maintained that despite an expected easing of food prices, inflation is projected to remain in double digits and above the CBN’s target range.

“Following a significant decline in revenue collections – from levels that were already among the lowest in the world – fiscal deficits are projected to remain elevated in the medium term,” the report stated.

Recognising various policy measures put in place by the federal government, the Bretton Wood Institution still believes there is need to put in place more broad market reforms in order to address the pressing balance of payment pressures in Nigeria

Air Task Force Destroys Hideout, Kills Several Terrorists At Sambisa Forest

The Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole has dealt another decisive blow on terrorists in the North East of the Country.

This is according to Major General John Enenche, the Coordinator Defence Media Operations of the Defence Headquarters.

In his communique on Tuesday, General Enenche said the latest offensive was carried out on Monday, 28 December 2020, at the ‘S’ Region in the heart of the Sambisa Forest in Borno State.

According to him, the airstrike, which was executed employing a force package of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets, was carried out after series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions revealed that the terrorists responsible for recent attacks in the Southern part of Borno and Northern part of Adamawa State had originated from the location.

“Accordingly, the NAF attack aircraft engaged the target area in successive passes, leading to the destruction of some of their structures and logistics stores, including a suspected anti-aircraft gun station as the terrorists fired at the NAF aircraft. Several insurgents were also neutralized in the process,” General Enenche’s statement read in part.

Whatsapp To Stop Working On Millions Of Phones From January

A new WhatsApp update will prevent the popular messaging app from working on millions of phones from 1 January 2021.

Older Android and iPhone devices will no longer support the latest version of the app, forcing owners to either update their mobile operating system or buy a new smartphone.

Any iPhone not running iOS 9 or newer, or any phone not running at least Android 4.0.3 – also known as Ice Cream Sandwich – will no longer be able to open or operate the Facebook-owned app.

This means all iPhone models up to the iPhone 4 will be unable to support WhatsApp, as these phones are not capable of updating to iOS 9.

The iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S were all released before iOS 9, however owners can still update to the operating system if they are yet to do so.

Android phones that will lose WhatsApp support include the Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Desire and LG Optimus Black.

Phone owners can see what software their device is using by checking the settings section. For iPhone users, this can be found under Settings > General > Software update.

Most of the 2 billion WhatsApp users around the world will not be hit by the change, though the small fraction that are will likely comprise several million people worldwide.

A similar update at the start of 2020 saw WhatsApp make the “tough decision” of ending support for even older phones.

Phones set to lose WhatsApp support on 1 January 2021:
Apple iPhone 1-4
Samsung Galaxy S2
HTC Desire
LG Optimus Black
Motorola Droid Razr

Any Android released before 2010
Phones that will need to update to at least iOS 9 or Android OS 4.0.3:
Apple iPhone 4S
iPhone 5
iPhone 5S
iPhone 6
iPhone 6S
Samsung Galaxy S3 and newer
Samsung Galaxy Note
HTC Sensation
HTC Thunderbolt
LG Lucid
Motorola Droid 4
Sony Xperia Pro and newer

The messaging giant will also be updating its Terms of Service next year, forcing users to agree to new privacy rules in order to keep using the app.

Earlier this month, WhatsApp confirmed to The Independent that all users “must agree" to the new terms by 8 February 2021 or else lose access to their chats.

President Buhari congratulates new Boxing champion, Ridwan Oyekola

His congratulatory message was contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled “President Buhari congratulates new boxing champion, Ridwan ‘The Scorpion’ Oyekola.”

According to the statement, the President joined all Nigerians to celebrate what he described as the historical feat after 57 years.

The statement read, “President Muhammadu Buhari warmly felicitates with new World Boxing Federation International Super Featherweight Champion, Ridwan Oyekola, ‘The Scorpion’’, joining all Nigerians to celebrate the historical feat after 57 years.

“The President affirms that Oyekola’s victory over an Argentine fighter, Lucas Montessino, brought more glory to the country, in a sport where another Nigerian, Anthony Joshua consistently blazes the trail, enjoining all youths to diligently follow their passion to the point of global recognition and celebration.

“President Buhari believes the new Super Featherweight Champion realised his dream after many years of focus and discipline, urging more commitment to sustain his place in history, after the Late Dick Tiger.

“The President equally commends the Local Organising Committee for the WBF Title Match, which held in Nigeria.”

I Didn't Call For A Coup — Bishop Kukah

Bishop Kukah, at a media conference with selected journalists held at St Bakhita Secretariat in Sokoto on Monday night, urged Nigerians to get the accurate statement rather than relying on different lies being peddled about in his name.

He emphasised that his message was based on his love for the country and had no political or ulterior motive.

“I am pained and very sad that my emergency critics never see that many innocent lives are being lost daily. The loss of lives in the last ten years, even before this administration's advent, calls for concern.

“The reactions are a reflection of every citizen that make up Nigeria. It is sad that when you drop something in Nigeria, everybody goes back to their enclave and abandon the larger picture. I am someone who never takes offence to what people say about me.

“What I said was my opinion based on evidence and what has happened in Nigeria, and if you looked into the records, there is evidence that justifies that statement, and if anyone thinks I am wrong, they should come out with a superior position

“It is unfair for a journalist or news medium to report that I called for a coup while expressing my personal view about Nigeria,” he noted.

“I have no plan and will never play partisan politics for any reason. Those who link my message to partisan politics are only playing to the gallery.

“Take, for instance, brilliant Nigerian youths making comments about Chelsea or Arsenal and have never been to England, does that make them players of such club sides?

“So, why will someone think because Bishop Kukah is speaking; therefore, he is a politician? People who make this argument are ignorant of elementary politics and ignorant of the role of a Priest".

“The truth is that a lot of us have not seen a priest saying what I am saying. The fact of the matter is, we are all in politics, but party politics for me, no. I am not a member of any political party, and I cannot be. If it comes to voting, I do my right.

“Whatever I said can please or displease anyone, but that is my own opinion and doesn’t stop others from saying their own opinion. If you think my motive is wrong, say yours.

“I have no problem with Muslims, Christians, or any other religion, but what I don’t like is when someone is using a religious issue to play politics, it is wrong.”

Deeper Life High School: Medical report out on alleged victim of sexual abuse

A medical report is out on the 11-year-old student said to have been sexually abused in the dormitory by fellow students of Deeper Life High School in Akwa Ibom State.

The victim’s father, Iniobong Archibong, disclosed this on Monday to PREMIUM TIMES.

“I just got a (medical) report today from the hospital,” said Mr Archibong who, however, said he would only disclose the content of the report after consultation with his lawyer.

“He has not yet been discharged. As soon as he is discharged, we will let the public know,” he added.

The JSS1 student is spending his ninth day in an undisclosed hospital in Uyo.

He was taken to the hospital on December 19 by his parents, after the mum, Deborah Okezie, took to Facebook to cry out over the alleged sexual abuse.

She said some senior students of the school took advantage of the boy when the school authorities switched him from his dormitory to another dormitory filled with senior students.

“They will remove his boxer and push their legs and hands into his anus,” Mrs Okezie said in the video which has gone viral on Facebook and Twitter.

“Look at a child I sent to school, he came back with a broken anus,” she added.

She said her son was frequently starved and beaten up by the senior students.

Mrs Okezie said there has been pressure on her to pull down from Facebook, video clips containing her complaint.

Deeper Life High School, with 21 campuses across Nigeria, is owned by the pentecostal church, The Deeper Christian Life Ministry. The school has its headquarters in Lagos, South-west Nigeria.

Meanwhile, William Kumuyi, a cleric and head of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry was trending on Twitter, Monday, because of the sexual abuse allegation.

Most Nigerians who commented on the microblogging site called on Mr Kumuyi to ensure the victim gets justice.

The Deeper Life High School suspended the principal of the Uyo campus as part of its investigation into the allegation, while the Akwa Ibom State government launched a separate investigation into it.

Enobong Mbobo, the commissioner for education, whose ministry is investigating the allegation, did not respond to calls and a text message seeking her comment.

Trust us to “restore peace, security and prosperity” across Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari in his Christmas Message has appealed to Nigerians to trust his administration in its efforts to “restore peace, security and prosperity” across Nigeria.

“For me, providing security for all residents in the country remains an article of faith. It formed a vital segment of this Administration’s three-point agenda right from inception, and we must follow through with it,” he said.

Many parts of Nigeria are faced with various security challenges with kidnappings and murder now commonplace. Over 300 people were killed across Nigeria in November with over 200 others kidnapped.

Buhari also said in a separate statement that because of the COVID-19 restrictions, he would “not be hosting the usual Christmas homage by religious and community leaders in the Federal Capital Territory.”

In his Christmas message, President Buhari said: “I felicitate with our Christian brothers and sisters in particular and all Nigerians in general on this joyous occasion of Christmas 2020, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.

“In Christendom, Christmas season represents joy, peace, hope, love, goodwill and imminent salvation. These worthy values which Jesus’ Advent symbolize, are very much needed in our country at this time when we are confronted with diverse challenges like rising spate of armed banditry, kidnappings, insurgency, economic recession and upsurge of COVID-19 infections.

“I wish to, therefore, enjoin fellow compatriots to appropriate the hope that comes with Christmas and reinvest trust in this Administration’s determination and unwavering commitment to restore peace, security and prosperity to our dear country.

“Under my watch, the Federal Government will continue to provide the needed support within available resources to the gallant members of our armed forces and security agencies as they confront threats to our citizens. While I commend them for their efforts so far, I urge them to do more to checkmate increasing incidents of security threats especially in the northern parts of the country as well as the entire nation in varying degrees. Their display of tact, camaraderie, and expertise that led to the recent return of abducted schoolboys of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, will remain a milestone in the annals of the country.

“For me, providing security for all residents in the country remains an article of faith. It formed a vital segment of this Administration’s three-point agenda right from inception, and we must follow through with it.

“I cannot in good conscience shirk this cardinal responsibility to secure lives and property. I feel pained each time a breach of peace and security occurs in any part of the nation. I am even more distressed when our youths, especially school children, are the targets and victims of mindless and malevolent elements in the society. As a parent, I share the emotional torture and agony parents and guardians go through whenever their children and wards fall into the cruel hands of these enemies of decency and good society.

“I plead with fellow compatriots to give our military and other security agencies more time, cooperation and support by volunteering credible intelligence/information on activities of armed bandits, insurgents and other criminal elements within their communities in order to put an end to this blight on our security landscape,” he said.

“To be sure, the problems are beyond the simplistic options being bandied around. We shall remain focused on following the complex, multi-dimensional route to reducing the incidents of insecurity to the barest minimum. Our people must be free to live and move without let or hindrance. This is crucial not only to enthroning an atmosphere of calm and social cohesion, but for the economy to grow.

“Let us use this season of goodwill and joy to renew our faith in the ability of this Administration to make a lasting difference in the lives of our hard-working people. Our Social Intervention measures and other economic policies are already yielding positive results even at modest rates.

“We shall deliberately target our youths so that they will not fall into the trap of unpatriotic elements to foment social disobedience leading to avoidable loss of lives and property.

“Let me reiterate that while the right to peaceful association and protest is guaranteed under our laws, this Administration will not fold its arms and watch protests however well-intended, degenerate into wanton killings of law enforcement and other security personnel as well as destruction of private and national assets.

“It is gladdening to note that the various schemes and components of the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP) are being implemented faithfully to support micro-small businesses. I am particularly delighted that artisans, small-time transporters, traders and farmers are the main beneficiaries as we continue to provide safety nets to the most vulnerable members of our society as well as business owners to mitigate the harsh economic environment occasioned by COVID-19.

“In spite of dwindling national revenue worsened by the pandemic, we will do all that is required to fully implement the 2021 Budget of Economic Recovery and Resilience. We are optimistic that all things being equal, we should be able to exit recession at the shortest possible time.

“There is every indication that our country is already experiencing a second wave of COVID-19 infection. As we celebrate Christmas with families and friends, I urge all citizens and residents to adhere strictly to the non-pharmaceutical prevention guidelines of regular hand-washing, wearing masks and social/physical distancing with a view to mitigating the spread of this devastating virus. While national and state institutions are trying their best, we must take individual responsibility and resist the strong temptation of compliance-fatigue by following the recommended protocols put in place by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and beat the ravaging pandemic.

“I have absolute confidence in the spirit of resilience of our people to do the needful and remain vigilant even as this festive season witnesses increased travels and celebrations. Staying alive to enjoy future festivals should be the watchword.

“I wish all Nigerians divine protection and Merry Christmas.”

Nigeria Close To Becoming Failed State - FINANCIAL TIMES

The Financial Times of London has described Nigeria as a country going backwards economically and plagued with terrorism, illiteracy, poverty, banditry, and kidnapping and risks becoming a failed state if things don’t take a drastic turn.

The UK-based newspaper said this in an editorial on Tuesday titled, ‘Nigeria at Risk of Becoming a Failed State’.

It said the abduction and subsequent rescue of over 300 schoolboys in Kankara, Katsina State, revived memories of the 276 Chibok schoolgirls abducted in Borno State in 2014.

According to the newspaper, while the government’s claim that no ransom was paid to the abductors of the schoolboys remains doubtful, other acts of criminality could not be overlooked.

The editorial read in part, “The government insists no ransom was paid. Scepticism is warranted. In a country going backwards economically, carjacking, kidnapping and banditry are among Nigeria’s rare growth industries. Just as the boys were going home, Nigerian pirates abducted six Ukrainian sailors off the coast.

“The definition of a failed state is one where the government is no longer in control. By this yardstick, Africa’s most populous country is teetering on the brink.”

The newspaper also questioned the claim by President Muhammadu Buhari that Boko Haram had been technically defeated.

It said contrary to the government’s claim, Boko Haram remained an ever-present threat.

The Financial Times stated, “President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 pronounced Boko Haram technically defeated’. That has proved fanciful. Boko Haram has remained an ever-present threat. If the latest kidnapping turns out to be its work, it will mark the spread of the terrorist group from its north-eastern base.

“Even if ‘ordinary’ bandits carried out the mass abduction — as now looks possible — it underlines the fact of chronic criminality and violence. Deadly clashes between herders and settled farmers have spread to most parts of Nigeria. In the oil-rich, but impoverished, Delta region, extortion through the sabotage of pipelines is legendary.”

The newspaper said security is not the only area where “the state is failing”.

The Financial Times added that Nigeria has more poor people than any other country even as Nigeria has the highest number of out of school children on earth.

The newspaper stated that as oil continues to lose its value, Nigeria’s economy would worsen.

“The population, already above 200 million, is growing at a breakneck 3.2 per cent a year. The economy has stalled since 2015 and real living standards are declining. This year, the economy will shrink 4 per cent after COVID-19 dealt a further blow to oil prices.

“In any case, as the world turns greener, the elite’s scramble for oil revenue will become a game of diminishing returns. The country desperately needs to put its finances, propped up by foreign borrowing, on a sounder footing,” it said.

The newspaper said Buhari, who has less than three years left in office, must use the remainder of his term, to redouble efforts at improving security.

It advised the government to restore trust in key institutions, among them the judiciary, the security services and the electoral commission, which will preside over the 2023 elections.

The Financial Times said the #EndSARS protests led by Nigerian youths, signalled a glimmer of hope for Nigeria’s teeming youth population.

It added, “The broad coalition that found political expression this year in the EndSARS movement against police brutality provides a shard of optimism. At least Nigeria has a relatively stable democracy. Now Nigeria’s youth — creative, entrepreneurial and less tainted by the politics of extraction — should use that system to reset the country’s narrative.”

The newspaper concluded by saying that it was time for Nigeria to restructure its political system and concentrate on security, health, education, power and roads.

“At the present trajectory, the population will double to 400 million by 2050. If nothing is done, long before then, Nigeria will become a problem far too big for the world to ignore,” it warned.

625 Deported Nigerians Returned Via Abuja Airport – Immigration

A total of 625 deported Nigerians returned to the country through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja.

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Sunday James, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

He added that 24 other Nigerians were repatriated for various criminal and immigration-related offences abroad.

Back in the country, 12 foreign nationals who failed to comply with Nigerian entry requirements, were refused admission and returned, said James.

He noted that the year witnessed a global pandemic – COVID-19 – which prompted various countries to enforce mandatory lockdown and border closure before their eventual relaxation within the year.

The NIS spokesman stated that Nigeria had its fair share of the COVID-19 experience and the Service, as the lead agency in charge of migration control and border management at the airport in Abuja, stepped up personnel protection to insulate them from contracting the disease.

He listed some of the measures taken to include the installation of glass shields that separate the operatives from passengers, as well as the use of face masks, hand gloves, hand sanitizer, among others.

“No fewer than 239,114 outbound and inbound migrants passed through NAIA, Abuja between 1st January 2020 and 15th December 2020. So far, 73,582 Nigerians and 46,665 non-Nigerians departed NAIA, Abuja for various destinations abroad.

“Similarly, 81,277 Nigerians and 37,590 non-Nigerians arrived through NAIA airport within the period under review,” the statement said.

James revealed that in the year, 34 Nigerians – predominantly young ladies – were refused departure for non-compliance and violation of immigration regulations and other extant laws.

He explained that the young ladies were victims of human trafficking being transported for forced prostitution and sexual exploitation and were between the ages of 18 to 28.

“Their final destination was Dubai, UAE. Upon interception, they were profiled and forwarded to NIS Service Headquarters for further investigation and released to the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for rehabilitation.

“In the same vein, the change of operational strategy led to the uncovering of the persons recruiting and trafficking these ladies via sting operation where six recruiters/traffickers were apprehended – four males and two females. Also, the identities of 3 recruiters/sponsors resident in Dubai were equally uncovered,” the statement said.

The NIS spokesman disclosed that NAIA Command, within the period under review, received and handed over 100 Nigerians whose offences were not immigration-related, such as drug-related issues, financial crimes, trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, to relevant agencies.

COVID-19: Schools to remain closed until January 18 – Nigerian govt

The Nigerian government has ordered the closure of all schools in the country until January 18, 2021.

The chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, made this known at its briefing on Monday.

Most schools across Nigeria have already closed for the year. But many had scheduled the first and second weeks of January for resumption.

On Monday, Mr Mustapha said the decision to move the date was reached based on advice from the federal ministry of education as part of measures to curtail the spread of coronavirus.

“The PTF on the advice of the Federal Ministry of Education, expects that schools would have vacated from the 18th December 2020 and remain closed till at least the 18th of January, 2021 to enable the measures introduced to take effect,” he said.

The federal government had on Monday re-introduced some restrictions as Nigeria joins the list of countries experiencing the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alleged $2m Fraud: How Atiku’s Lawyer, Giwa-Osagie, Laundered $2m –Witness

The ongoing trial of Uyiekpen Giwa-Osagie, a lawyer to a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, continued on Monday, December 21, 2020, with the second prosecution witness, Shuaibu Shehu, an investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) telling Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, how the defendant received instruction from the former Vice President to give the sum of $2m to one of his (Atiku) security guards.

Mr Giwa-Osagie is standing trial alongside his brother, Erhunse Giwa-Osagie, on a three-count charge of money laundering to the tune of $2M (Two Million US Dollars) brought against him by the EFCC.

One of the counts reads: “ That you, Uyiekpen Glwa-Osagie and Erhunse Giwa-Osagie, sometime in February, 2019, in Nigeria, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court conspired to commit an offence to wit: making cash payment of the sum of $2,000,000.00 (Two Million United States Dollars) without going through financial institution, which sum exceeded the amount authorized by Law; and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18(a), and 1(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act.”

At Monday’s sitting, Mr Shehu, who was led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Kufre Uduak, told the court that the Commission, sometime in 2019, received intelligence that some politicians were moving around with US Dollars to influence the result of the last general elections.

He said: “It was also revealed that the sum of $1.6m (One Million, Six Hundred US Dollars) was given to one Alhaji Lawan Abdullahi, a Bureau De Change Operator (BDC).

“Based on this intelligence, my team conducted investigations and recovered the sum of $1,459m (One Million, Four Hundred and Fifty-Nine Million US Dollars) and N50m (Fifty Million Naira) in cash.

“It was also discovered that the money came from a company called Guensey Trust Nigeria Limited controlled by the first defendant (Giwa-Osagie) trust for Atiku Abubakar.”

In his further testimony, the witness told the court that Guensey Trust received into its own account the sum of €26m (Twenty-Six Million Euros) from a foreign company, Intel West Africa.

According to him, “The money was then converted into Dollars, which was $30m.

“Guensey Trust transferred the sum of $5m (Five Million Dollars) into Andrew Pitchford, a company owned by the 2nd defendant, and was converted into Naira through a BDC Company.

“The 2nd defendant was also instructed by the 1st defendant to raise the sum of $2m for someone, whom we later found out to be a security guard to Atiku Abubakar.

“Our findings revealed that the first defendant (Giwa-Osagie) received the instruction from the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, to hand over the money to the said person.”

Justice Aneke adjourned the matter till January 13, 2021 for continuation for trial.

Olu Of Warri, Ikenwoli Godfrey Has Died Of COVID-19

The monarch died on Monday morning, barely a week after his fifth coronation anniversary. He was said to have met with the late Major General John Irefin, who died earlier this month from COVID-19 complications.

Though none of the palace chiefs was willing to confirm or deny it, there was palpable apprehension in the palace vicinity on Monday while some people were also in a sombre mood.

The monarch was said to have died on Monday morning from the coronavirus. Another source said many palace workers besieged the adjoining shops selling strong alcoholic drinks to buy from them as they believed it would cure them of COVID-19 should they have contracted it from the monarch.

“Olu of Warri is dead but the palace chiefs are trying to keep the information hidden from the public till they are sure the time is right,” the source added.

The late monarch, who was born on March 19, 1955, ascended the throne on December 12, 2015.

SGF Mustapha: My Four Children Tested Positive For COVID-19

Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), says four of his children have tested positive for coronavirus.

Mustapha, who is the chairman of the presidential task force on COVID-19, announced this during a media briefing in Abuja in Monday.

He also said a family member who is one-year-old tested positive for the virus.

The SGF had gone into isolation last week after he was exposed to the virus.

He said while he and his wife tested negative for the virus, his children are currently receiving treatment.

He described the last one week as traumatic and urged Nigerians to not let their guard down as the country has entered into the second wave of the pandemic.

Mustapha added that the spike in coronavirus cases is as a result of the consequences of certain occurrences in the last few weeks such as increase in social gatherings and disregard for health protocols.

“A lot of discussion is still going on around the calls for the restriction of international travels due to the discovery of new strains of the virus in certain countries,” he said.

“The PTF, aviation and health authorities including the WHO are assessing the situation closely and would take a position as soon as cogent scientific basis are established.”

COVID-19: Suspend Flights From UK Now, Atiku Warns FG

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the federal government to restrict flights from the United Kingdom temporarily.

Its a thing of worry for countries all over the world over the news of a new strain of COVID-19 circulating in the UK.

The new strain is said to be more infectious than the original COVID-19 virus.

Several countries, including France and other EU states, have already suspended flights from the UK.

“The reason Nigeria took a harder than necessary hit during the first wave of the #COVID19 virus is that the Federal Government failed to heed the warnings of well-meaning Nigerians, like myself and others, to shut down our borders once the virus became a pandemic,” Atiku said in a statement on Sunday.

“Hindsight is 20/20. Nevertheless, we must learn from history, or we stand the risk of repeating it.

“The new strain of COVID19 that has erupted in the United Kingdom, and specifically, London, can add to Nigeria’s health emergency if we do not act with an abundance of caution and temporarily halt all flights to and from the UK until this new strain is brought under control.

“Already, prudent nations are taking prompt action, and Nigeria must take necessary precautions due to the volume of air traffic between Nigerian airports and London, where this new strain has erupted.

“We must face the reality that our health sector is not sufficiently prepared to handle a sudden and unpredictable surge of this pandemic. We have already lost lives needlessly. We need not lose more.

“In the case of this virus, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Appeal Court Nullifies Olisa Metuh’s Conviction, Orders Fresh Trial

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has nullified the conviction and seven years jail term imposed on a former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

A three-man panel of the court led by Justice Stephen Adah in a unanimous judgment held that the proceedings of the Federal High Court leading to the conviction of Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited, were tainted with bias and therefore must not be allowed to stand.

Justice Adah who delivered the lead judgment on Wednesday held that the utterances of the trial judge, Justice Okon Abang, in the course of the trial, established that he was biased against the convicts.

The Appellate Court, therefore, ordered that trial be conducted afresh.

He directed that the case file be sent back to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for reassignment to another judge other than Justice Abang.

Justice Abang had in his judgment delivered on February 25, sentenced Metuh to seven years imprisonment for fraudulently receiving N400 million from the office of the then National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (retired).

“South-West Nigeria, being part of the Southern Region, has the right to contend for the presidency of the country like every other region in the south. “In the South West, our cause is buoyed by the fact that we have someone in our midst, who towers above other aspirants to this highly exalted office. He is a ready-made man for the job. He is one of the most experienced politicians in the country today – with a track record of unparalleled achievements in all facets of governance. He is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Governor of Lagos State, national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC”, Adeyeye remarked.

Bring back our boys now, Okonjo-Iweala tells FG

Former Nigerian Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has urged the Federal Government to bring back the over 300 schoolboys abducted from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.

According to her, those using the children as pawns must be held accountable.

Okonjo-Iweala, who is the leading candidate for the job of director-general of the World Trade Organisation, made this known on Twitter handle last night.

She wrote, “The abduction of more than 300 schoolboys in Katsina is heartbreaking. What a recurring nightmare. My heart goes out to the families of the missing boys. The authorities must do all possible to #BringBackOurBoys! Those using our children as pawns must be held accountable!”

The bandits had stormed the school on Friday night and abducted the students after a gun duel with the police. The President, Muhammadu Buhari had arrived in the state on Friday, hours before the abduction took place.

Boko Haram terrorist group, on Tuesday, claimed responsibility for the abduction, saying it had not entered into negotiations with the government contrary to claims by the authorities.

The terror group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, in a recording, also said the shameful act was done in order to discourage people from obtaining western education.

The Kankara students’ abduction is not the first in the history of the nation. Non-state actors had in the past abducted hundreds of secondary school girls from Chibok, in Borno State; and Dapchi in Yobe State. Some of them eventually regained freedom while a number of them were detained in the enclaves of their abductors and sexual abusers.

Reps suspend FG’s 774,000 jobs scheme

The House of Representatives has asked the federal governmet to suspend the special works scheme which seeks to create 774,000 jobs.

The ministry of finance, budget and national planning was asked not to fund the programme scheduled to kick off in January 2021 by the lower chamber of the national assembly which also asked President Muhammadu Buhari to reinstate Nasiru Argungu, director-general of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), the agency in charge of the programme.

The new directive is coming amid clashes between the National Assembly and the Federal Ministry of Labour, Employment and Productivity.

Though the National Assembly had appropriated N52bn for the exercise in the 2020 Appropriation Act, they faulted the removal of the Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment, Dr Nasiru Argungu, who had backed the parliament in the controversy.
