Lady pours hot water on 8-year-old househelp for licking milk

An Anambra couple have been called out for maltreating their 8-year-old househelp.

The couple identified as Mrs Ogochukwu Anichukwu and Mr. Emmanuel Anichukwu were accused of flogging the little girl mercilessly and starving her repeatedly. It was further gathered that the girl has been seen several times eating sand because of starvation.

The couple were recently dragged to the human right legal initiative in Ekwulobia, Anambra State following the injury the 8-year-old househelp sustained after allegedly being poured hot water by Ogochukwu.

The lady reportedly poured hot water on her househelp because she caught her licking milk meant for her baby.

Facebook user, Jane Iyke who shared their photos wrote;

This case is before Human right legal initiative Ekwulobia Anambra State already but if you know this girl Mma from Awgu Enugu State, kindly advise the family to come and pick their child before they bring her back in corpse.

This child is living with Mrs Ogochukwu Anichukwu from Ndikelionwu and Mr. Emmanuel Anichukwu from Enugu State as a househelp in Nanka Anambra state.

This girl's offense was that she licked the milk meant for her baby, she poured hot water on her and locked her inside so that neighbors won't see her in that state.

The neighbours confirmed to have seen the girl eating sand severally because of starvation. She's now used to flogging which was why the woman used hot water this time.

The neighbor that reported to the Human rights legal aid according to them entered their house unexpectedly and caught Mma trying to run inside to avoid been seen as she was vehemently warned not to allow anyone see her.

The girl is now in the hospital for proper medical care.

Former First Bank staff sentenced to 98yrs for stealing bank’s N49m and $368,000 (photo)

A former staff of First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Oreoluwa Adesakin, has been sentenced to 98 years in prison by Justice Muniru Olagunju of Oyo High Court for fraud.

A statement released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, said Adesakin was found to have committed financial fraud against her employers to the tune of N49,320,652.32 and an additional $368,203.00 belonging to the bank, which she converted to personal use.

She was prosecuted by the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 14-count charges bordering on stealing, forgery, and fraudulent accounting.

One of the charges read

“That you Oreoluwa Adesakin sometime between the months of May 2013 and November 2013, at Ibadan within the Ibadan Judicial Division, whilst being a staff of First Bank PLC stole the sum of N25,974,116.13 from First Bank PLC MoneyGram Payment Naira Account, the property of First bank PLC.”

She pleaded not guilty to all the charges, which necessitated her trial.

EFCC counsel, Usman Murtala, presented every vital document and witnesses which nailed the convict. The judge noted the EFCC amassed a pool of incontrovertible evidence against the convict and did a diligent investigation and prosecution.

He pronounced Adesakin guilty of all the charges, sentencing her to seven years in prison without an option of fine on each of the 14 counts, which will run concurrently.

Apart from the jail term, the convict is also to restitute the First Bank, through the EFCC, all the money she stole.

According to EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, Adesakin was arraigned April 4, 2014, by the EFCC following a conclusion of investigations against her which arose from a petition from her former employer, dated December 18, 2013.

The bank alleged in the petition that Adesakin, as its Money Transfer Operator, who was saddled with the responsibility of effecting payments through Western Union Money Transfer and Money Gram platforms, fraudulently manipulated accounting and withdrew N49,320,652.32 and another $368,203.00 for herself, which the bank only uncovered while reviewing its internal account.

The EFCC was also able to establish that Adesakin used part of the proceeds of her crime to acquire landed properties in different parts of Oyo State.

BREAKING: Court Dismisses El-Zakzaky’s No Case Submission, Orders Continuation Of Trial

A  Kaduna State High court sitting in the state capital has dismissed the motion of no-case-submission filed by the embattled leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria(IMN)  Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zazaky and his wife Zeenat.

Both of them are standing trial on eight counts of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of the public peace, among other allegations.

The IMN leader who was brought to court on Tuesday morning amid tight security, had asked the court to quash the Kaduna State government’s case against them for lack of evidence.

During the last sitting on August 7, the presiding Judge, Justice Gideon Kurada fixed today for ruling on the no-case submission, after counsel to the defendants, Abubakar Marshall, holding the briefs for the lead counsel, Femi Falana, had asked the court to quash the charges preferred against the IMN leader by the government for not “disclosing an offence known to law contrary to Section 36 (8) and (12) of the 1999 constitution as amended”.

The Prosecution Counsel, Dari Bayero also adopted his final arguments in the matter.

Following the dismissal of the no-case submission, the court also ordered the continuation of the trial.

Elzakzaky and his wife were arrested and detained since December 2015 following a bloody clash between IMN members and the Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna State.

Judge Suspends US Ban On Tiktok

A judge late Sunday stopped the US from banning downloads of TikTok, freeing the video snippet-sharing mobile app to keep winning new users here — for now.

District Judge Carl Nichols issued a temporary injunction at the request of TikTok, which the White House has called a national security threat, alleging that its Chinese parent firm is tied to Beijing.

An order from US President Donald Trump sought to ban new downloads of the app at the end of Sunday, but allowed until November 12 for a second phase aimed at stopping TikTok from operating in the US entirely.

The judge denied TikTok‘s request to also suspend the November 12 ban, but noted that his decision was “for now.”

What about TikTok lovers?

TikTok lovers in the US will wake Monday to life as usual, at least in regard to their enjoyment of the platform.

That was going to be the case anyway, since the ban that had been poised to take effect Sunday only applied to new downloads and updates.

However, getting access to updates means longtime TikTok users will be able to get security patches to keep them better protected while using the app.

It also means US users will be able to get any new features TikTok releases.

Where from here?

The judge’s order tells TikTok and the US to work out a schedule to proceed, and that typically means the court wants opposing parties to find middle ground.

“My sense is that it is a pragmatic splitting of the baby for the short term, to give a little time for them to resolve the disputes and come to a resolution.” said University of Richmond law school professor Carl Tobias.

Once lawyers get a chance to review the reasoning behind the judge’s decision, the US could appeal the decision putting a hold on the download ban.

Legal analysts interviewed by AFP thought it unlikely the US would appeal, since lawyers typically don’t want to make an enemy of a judge early in a case by attacking their judgment.

Meanwhile, TikTok‘s overarching suit challenging the legality of Trump’s executive orders continues through the court.

TikTok‘s tomorrow?

Outside of the courtroom, TikTok can continue trying to work out a sale or alliance to appease US concerns.

A tentative deal would make Silicon Valley giant Oracle the technology partner for TikTok and a stakeholder in a new entity to be known as TikTok Global.

Such a deal is expected to be dimly viewed by Beijing, where some consider the US move an unjustified appropriation of Chinese technology.

Labour accepts deregulation as govt halts hike electricity tariffs

The pressure mounted on both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) by petrol marketers, tanker owners and other stakeholders influenced the decision of the unions to reluctantly accept deregulation as a policy.

However, in the spirit of give and take, the Federal Government also accepted to reverse the increment in the electricity tariffs.

The meeting started 8.37pm last night at the banquet hall of Aso Rock on Sunday.

The Guardian gathered that both labour unions will only take a final decision on the matter when it reached concrete agreement with government.

Stakeholders argued that Nigeria is ripe for deregulation especially if she wants to encourage the building of refineries in the country.

The marketers also argued that subsidy has led to mismanagement of the regime, which had led to the mounting unpaid subsidy payment.

Labour had called for strike to protest the increment in fuel prices and electricity tariffs.

In sensitising Nigerian over the weekend, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and its Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart combed major streets of Abuja to distribute leaflets to motorists, market men and women and workers at the weekend explaining the reasons behind the strike and the need for Nigerians to resist alleged neo-liberal policies that demand removal of subsidy on public utilities such as electricity, PMS and water.

This comes as facts are emerging on why labour rebuffed promises of constitution of committees to work out palliatives at the last Friday meeting.

Sources that participated in the parley told The Guardian that the refusal of labour to buy the promise made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, that a committee whose membership will comprise labour and government officers fell on deaf hears because of similar promise that was made in 2016 but never fulfilled as soon as government succeeded in dividing labour then.

Indeed, when the Friday meeting ended at 8.05pm, the labour delegation did not wait to eat the dinner that was provided as they briskly walked into the waiting buses led by NLC President, Ayuba Wabba and TUC President, Quadri Olaleye.

The source said: “When we went for this meeting last week Friday, government came up with the same agenda it used in 2016. But it failed this time as we sat there for more than 45 minutes refusing to say anything and government officials too did not have anything to say. It appeared to us that government does not have any plan beside the 2016 tactics. In 2016, government lashed on the division that arose after the 2015 delegates’ conference which led to the formation of a faction of the NLC, which later metamorphosed into United Labour Congress (ULC), which had NUPENG and NUEE as foundation members.

“This greatly hampered the capacity of labour to execute a successful protest. The Federal Government reaped bountifully from the crises. But the atmosphere has changed today. The ULC has dissolved into the mainstream NLC while both the President of the defunct ULC, Joe Ajaero is now a deputy president of the NLC and NUPENG now occupies the position of the Vice President.

Now, labour is formidable and speaks with one indissoluble voice. This strike might be the biggest and deadliest we have seen in the history of this country is the pump price is not reversed to N145 per litre and electricity tariff reversed. We know that two steps were part of the condition given by Bretton Wood institution for Nigeria to get more loans.”

Pressure Mounts On Tinubu To Back Osinbajo For 2023 Presidency

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, some powerbrokers in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are already mounting pressure on Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, national leader of the party, to bury his rumoured presidential ambition in 2023 and queue behind Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Daily Independent has gathered.

Even though Tinubu is yet to declare whether he will run in 2023 or not, a lot of his supporters believe he is very much interested in the race and his silence is borne out of his desire not to distract the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is yet to mark two years of his second term in office.

However, some of his supporters have been launching several groups, both at home and in the diaspora, to rally support for his ambition, saying it is non-negotiable.

Also, some prominent Nigerians have also been canvassing support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition, saying he is the best man to succeed President Buhari in 2023. They include Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF); elder statesman, Tanko Yakassai, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, Chief Henry Ajomale and several others.

Daily Independent gathered that prominent leaders of APC have resolved to zone the position of national chairman to the North while the presidency will be zoned to the South, with many of them agreeing in principle that it will be unfair for the North to retain the position after President Buhari must have completed his eight years.

It was also learnt that many of the party leaders, especially in the Northern bloc of the country, are favourably disposed to Osinbajo taking over from Buhari based on his loyalty, commitment and deep knowledge of the programmes of the government, especially relating to the management of the economy.

According to a credible source in the party, “There is no doubt Asiwaju is interested in the 2023 presidential race. He has every right to do so and he is very qualified based on his record as a former senator, governor of Lagos for eight years and what he has been able to achieve nationally even after leaving office.

“But for many of us, we believe that if the presidency is zoned to the South and later micro-zoned to the South- West, the current vice president should be allowed to take over from the president. We have adduced so many reasons for this".

“The first is that he has been tested before and he has proven that he has the expertise to manage the affairs of a diverse nation like Nigeria. We are all witnesses to what happened in 2017 when President Buhari was ill and the vice president presided over the affairs of the nation in acting capacity.

“That was a period when Nigeria was almost at the precipice with many groups in the country, especially the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), seeking self-determination. He was able to manage the situation very well to the admiration of the whole country and even the president commended him upon his return to the country.

“There are also other factors we are putting into consideration. Three of these factors are age, religion and his unblemished public record. The vice president is 63 now and will be 66 by 2023. He will be a blend between the younger and older generation and many youths already see him as one of their own.

“On the issue of religion, we all know the two major religions in this country are Islam and Christianity. It will be awkward if we allow another Muslim to take over from President Buhari in 2023. I doubt if that will be fair to our brothers in the Christian faith".

“However, 2023 is still a long way from now and the president will not impose a successor. We the party leaders will also not do likewise. We can only appeal to the likes of Asiwaju and present these facts before him.

“One thing is certain, the APC presidential ticket will not be handed over to anyone on a platter of gold. At the end of the day, everyone will be asked to go to the field and test their strength. Whoever wins the party’s ticket, then good luck to him”, he said.

Speaking with our correspondent, a senior lawyer from the South-South, who is also a member of the APC, said he personally advised Tinubu to maintain his respect as national leader of the APC and support one of the boys he has mentored politically, especially Osinbajo whom he (Tinubu) nominated as running mate to Buhari in December 2014.

“We used to be very close and I have offered him advice in time past. I once advised him to remain as the party’s national leader and nominate one of his boys as president. A lot of people said Buhari has relegated him but I believe Osinbajo as a man of God and gentleman won’t do that. I said he will even have more influence in the government compared to what is happening now. But I believe he wasn’t receptive to the idea and we have not been talking again,” he said.

Obaseki is free to return to APC if he wants to - Governor Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, says Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, who was recently re-elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, is free to return to the All Progressives Congress if he feels the PDP is not working for him.

The governor made this known in an interview with Channels TV on Friday morning, September 25.

Obaseki defected from the APC to the PDP in June 2020 after a long battle with his predecessor and former National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomole. He contested on the platform of the PDP in the September 19 governorship election, and won.

During the interview with Channels TV, Governor Wike who was the chairman of the PDP campaign council for the Edo State governorship election was asked what he would do if Obaseki left the PDP for the APC following his victory.

Responding, Wike said

“I don’t want to discuss something that is not going to be possible. However, assuming it happens, so what? That is politics.

If the governor believes that the PDP is no longer a party for him to actualise his vision and his mission, there is nothing wrong but I don’t believe that it is going to happen because the governor has consistently told us that there is no way he will leave the PDP. If he leaves the PDP, people in Edo State will not be happy.

And he is somebody I have that trust in that he will not leave the party. This is a party that clothed him. This is a party that when it was raining, gave him an umbrella.”

US Moves To Restrict Nigerian Students To Two-Year Courses Over ‘National Security’

Foreign students including Nigerians could be restricted to admission into US universities for not more than a two-year period, a proposed government policy has shown.

This comes a few months after a failed plan to strip international students of their visas if they are not required to attend some classes in person, during coronavirus lockdown, in July.

The new guidelines from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), if approved, mean affected students will be barred from four-year courses in the US.

It was not immediately clear if Nigerian students currently studying in the US would be affected.

In the new measures published in the US federal register and scheduled for announcement on Friday, the DHS proposed a “maximum admission period of up to 2 years for certain students”, including those from Nigeria.

Among the countries targeted in the new policy are those on the US “State sponsor of terrorism list” and students from countries that visitors have overstay rate of more than 10 percent.

The DHS 2019 overstay report puts Nigeria’s in-country overstay rate at 11.12 percent; most African countries are also above the 10 percent maximum rate.

“A key goal of shifting aliens in F status from D/S to an admission for a fixed time period is to provide pre-defined time periods for immigration officers to evaluate whether a nonimmigrant has maintained his or her status,” the DHS said.

“If an immigration officer finds that an alien violated his or her status prior to or during the course of an EOS adjudication and denies the EOS request, the alien generally would begin accruing unlawful presence the day after issuance of the denial.”

It also said that the proposed rule seeks to reduce instances in which F, J, and I nonimmigrants — mostly students and exchange visitors — “unlawfully remain in the United States after their program or practical training ends.”

“Under this proposed rule, aliens who remain in the United States beyond a fixed time period generally would begin accruing unlawful presence,” it said.

Following the coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration was in July forced to abandon a plan to strip international students of their visas if they are not required to attend some classes in person.

APC Suspends Kayode Fayemi Over Anti-Party Activities

Ekiti state governor, Kayode Fayemi has been suspended by a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State on Friday, September 25. The faction was led by Senator Tony Adeniyi. The governor was suspended over alleged anti-party activities.

Read the full statement....

RE: DR. KAYODE FAYEMI ANTI–PARTY ACTIVITIES

After painstakingly reviewing the activities of some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, we the authentic members of the Party in the State and Members of State Executive Committee per Section 12.8 of APC Constitution being duly constituted members of the National Convention of the Party, rose from its meeting of the 23rd September, 2020 and resolved as follows:

1. We note the continued illegalities in the name of the party, being conducted by Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who as Governor is an ordinary member of the SEC and ought to have called meetings of this duly constituted body as a critical party organ, has failed to do so since his assumption of office in 2018.

2.That the body currently masquerading as the elected members of the SEC or as the State Working Committee or appendages is unknown to us (as due statutory members of SEC) since no Ward Congress has taken place in Ekiti State APC since inception. All SEC members listed in Section 12.8 of our constitution, (i) to (xxvii) as such are open positions since only duly officiated Ward congresses with INEC observation can fill these positions.

3.As such, only the duly elected members of the APC in the state serving as Governor, Deputy Governor, Speaker & Deputy Speaker as well as Principal Officers of the House and Members of the National Convention which includes all present and past National Assembly members today constitute the State SEC of our great party.

4.To this end, in the absence of a properly organized body and meeting, and the continued insistence of the Governor to neglect his duty to initiate Ward Congresses or call a meeting of the SEC to deliberate upon pertinent issues, we as loyal members of our party and members of the State Executive Committee met to rescue our party from continued denigration and abuse, and resolved thus:

1.That Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the Executive Governor of Ekiti State is hereby suspended from the Party in view of his numerous anti-Party activities especially his role in the recent concluded governorship election in Edo State which is contrary to the provisions of Article 21 (A) (ii) of the APC Constitution.

For five days prior to the Edo elections Gov Fayemi hosted PDP big wig Mr Femi Fani- Kayode in the government house in Ado Ekiti in the run up to the Edo elections . It was here they perfected the coup against our party in Edo State. This is same Fani-Kayode who daily abuses President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the APC as a party as well a vital section of our country. We have evidence of that meeting.

Fani-Kayode specifically said he has gone on his tour as part of an effort between him and Fayemi to build a cross-party alliance and few hours after leaving Ekiti he fired a shot at Asiwaju Tinubu.

1 (a) We also have evidence of celebration by his aides in Ekiti government house and on social media.

1(b) We also recall his role in the gubernatorial election in Oyo State where he supported the PDP candidate to defeat the APC candidate. A second tranche of money he sent to Gov Makinde in the election was intercepted by soldiers. The courier Mr Ayo Adegbite, his Chief Protocol Officer was arrested and he immediately disowned and announced his sack . Mr Adegbite remains his aide till date.

1(c) We also recall the support he provided a PDP candidate who challenged an APC Senator Prince Dayo Adeyeye in the Tribunal. He moved the judges to Kaduna to deliver judgement when he knew what he planned against his party was unpopular in Ekiti. We have more to tell on this betrayal and traitorous act of his. APC Senator is out of the Senate today and PDP is in. The relationship between Fayemi and Senator Olujimi of PDP , the beneficiary of his treachery is known to all in Ekiti State.

We also recall his resort to court when majority of party members nominated late Senator Abiola Ajimobi for Deputy National Chairman of the party. He fought Ajimobi till death.

1(d) His fraternisation with the PDP in continuation of his bid for Vice Presidential candidate under the party ( if his bid for Presidential candidate in APC fails ) was masked by commissioning of projects in Rivers State, a smokescreen for his consultation to woo the support of Governor Nyesom Wike last year .

2. That the Paul Omotosho led faction of APC Executive in the State is hereby declared illegal and suspended from the Party for failure to emerge in accordance to the Constitution of the Party.

3.That Paul Omotoso and his co travellers’s refusal to respect court proceedings in which they are not only joined but appeared in court through the proceedings but defiantly disrespected the court contrary to the hallowed decision of the Supreme Court in OJUKWU vs GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE

4.That Paul Omotosho faction of the executive should desist from parading themselves as the Executive Members of the Party in the State and that the Nigerian Police and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the general public should take note.

5.That Senator Tony Adeniyi, as a statutory member of the SEC going by our party’s constitution, was elected by all members attending as the Acting Chairman of the State Executive Committee in the absence of direction or directive from the National Body. He is as such the only one thus capable to call the SEC meeting as duly required by the constitution from henceforth.

6.The committee seating also agreed to begin bridge building across our members, statewide and nationally, and set up a special intervention committee, APC Majeobaje Working Group, to be led by Prince Bamgboye Adegoroye, and six other individuals from across our great state. That working group will henceforth do the hard work of rebuilding APC in Ekiti state and prevent the oncoming annihilation of our party if we take no action at the upcoming polls.

We note that the All Progressives Congress is a party of progressives, and must do things only in line with the law. The APC cannot act against its constitution or the law of the land, hence this intervention became urgently necessary and pertinent before marauders destroy the party permanently.

It must be emphasized that with the increasingly discerning capacity and sophistication of our people we cannot afford to take them for granted. We must be able to sustain the relevance of our party in Ekiti State, hold our members and win new members. We are obligated to ensure that the light of our electoral prospect and fortune is not dimmed or extinguished.

Signed:

For Ekiti State APC State Executive Committee

1. Senator Tony Adeniyi

⁃ Senator , Ekiti South Senatorial District (2011 – 2015)

2. Senator Babafemi Ojudu

⁃ Senator , Ekiti Central Senatorial District ( 2011 – 2015 )

‘Lagos Has Potential To Be Another Dubai’ - Sanwo-Olu

The just concluded two-day Ministerial Performance Review Retreat organised by the executive arm of the Lagos State Government ended with a strong charge to members of the State’s Executive Council to deploy their physical and mental resources to bringing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s development vision to reality.

The Governor, in his closing remarks at the event, said Lagos possessed all required to attain Dubai development model, urging the drivers of his administration’s vision of Greater Lagos to be articulate and purposeful in the discharge of the tasks assigned to them.

Sanwo-Olu, who was visibly enthusiastic about the encouraging feedback from the review of performance of his Government’s actions, applauded the cabinet members and heads of the State Government’s agencies for the progress recorded in the last one year.

He, however, said people’s expectations of his administration’s efforts were more than what had been achieved so far, charging the appointees to brace for more work.

The Governor urged the cabinet members and executives of the parastatals to increase their momentum and deploy more resourcefulness to the implementation of policies and programmes designed to transform the lives of the residents and the State’s economy.

He said: “There are many takeaways from this two-day retreat which must energise us further to deliver on our goals and promises to the people. But, one key thing we must take away from this exercise is the fact that we have sustained our attempts to transform Lagos and these efforts are being acknowledged by those who understand what development is all about.

“We have many great actions and ideas we have implemented, which probably have not been properly communicated. Now we need to be smarter, more organised and articulate in the way we go about our programmes so that our efforts can be more visible. The Ministry of Information and Strategy and everyone that has strength in communication should begin to magnify these efforts and show the world how Lagos is changing.”

Despite the slow pace of socio-economic activities across all sectors, which is occasioned by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Governor said his administration would not give excuses to residents, stressing that the virus would not derail his Government’s development agenda.

Sanwo-Olu charged all Commissioners and Special Advisers to work together and exchange information for better service delivery.

He said: “We need to work together and share information with one another. This way, we articulate our successes and progress better.”

Am not under US Surveillance says Atiku

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has denied reports that he and some members of his family are under the United States of America watchlist, describing same as “recycled false allegations.”

Media reports surfaced on Monday to the effect that the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, FinCEN, an agency of the United States Department of Treasury, has flagged some transactions linked to the top politician as suspicious, in its surveillance of money movements within the international system.

Reacting to the media report, the 2019 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in a statement signed by his media aide, Paul Ibe, said neither him nor any member of his family has breached any law, locally or internationally.

The statement reads: “My attention has been drawn to recycled and regurgitated lies about the person of Atiku Abubakar.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Atiku Abubakar is not under any US watch list, neither has he been charged, or will ever be charged by the United States Justice Department or any other in a foreign jurisdiction.

“It will be recalled that these recycled lies were re-unearthed just before the February 23, 2019 Presidential election, and to put paid to them, His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, applied for and received a US visa, whereupon he embarked on a visit to the United States on January 17, 2019. He stayed at a hotel just miles to the United States Department of Justice.

“Atiku Abubakar in the course of that trip was also received in audience, by officials of the United States Government.

“These ‘new’ reports are a desperate gambit to recast these discredited accusations. They are meant to divert the attention of Nigerians from the recent statement by the Secretary of State of the United States, Mr Mike Pompeo, announcing visa and travel bans for certain unnamed but notorious individuals.

“Moreover, the timing of this report, less than 24 hours after the Edo state gubernatorial elections, should give some thought to thinking people.

“And considering the season that we are in, more of such jaundiced stories seeking to discredit Atiku Abubakar would come. However, it needs to be reiterated that the former Vice President and every member of his family keeps a clean business portfolio that has nothing to do with government resources and in conformity with local and foreign laws of respective countries.”
