Killing Of Farmers: Ekiti State To Create Ranching For Herdsmen

The Ekiti State government has revealed that it would key into the National Livestock Transformation Plan of the Federal Government by creating enclosed ranching in the state.

This development was coming barely three days after suspected herdsmen killed two farmers in Isaba-Ekiti, Ikole Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement, on Monday, by the Information Commissioner, Akin Omole, the government noted it would not allow the killing of farmers and residents of the state by criminal herders who are hibernating in the farms to perpetrate evils against citizens in the state.

According to him, the state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has given the police and the Amotekun corps within 24 hours to comb forests in the Local Government Area and secure it from further attacks

Omole said: “it is clear that the Ikole/Oye axis of the state is vulnerable to incursions of criminally-minded elements who want to take advantage of the forest topography to visit unmitigated terror on farming communities in the area. We will not allow this to happen.

“We reiterate that in consonance with the recent Akure peace meeting and joint communiqué issued between Southwest Governors and the Miyetti Allah, open/night grazing and underage herding remain banned in Ekiti State. The state is also making alternative arrangements for enclosed grazing/ranching under the National Livestock Transformation Plan in the state.

“The Government of Ekiti State places great value on the safety of lives and property of its residents. While we will continue to promote the peaceful coexistence of all law-abiding Nigerians irrespective of ethnic or religious background, the government will not condone acts of mindless violence that creates fear amongst our people or deter them from going about their lawful duties in safety on their farms or in their communities.”

The Commissioner explained that security agents in the state would enforce the latest directive of President Muhammadu Buhari on those going about with dangerous weapons.

“Similarly, in line with Mr President’s recent directive, anyone armed with automatic weapons found in Ekiti forests will be considered a dangerous criminal and treated accordingly by security operatives,” he said.

The government advised residents of Isaba-Ekiti to support the security agents with useful information that would help in arresting the criminal elements, adding that, “they should continue to go about their lawful businesses; we remain committed to protecting lives and property.”

''I feel good''- Nigerian doctor who was the first to receive COVID19 vaccine shares his experience

Dr. Cyprian Ngong of the National Hospital, Abuja, was the first Nigerian to receive a jab of the AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID19 vaccine in Nigeria.

He took the jab at the launch of the COVID19 vaccination ceremony which held at the Trauma center, National Hospital Abuja today March 5.

The vaccine was administered to Dr Ngong by the Executive Director of the NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib, at the National Hospital in the nation’s capital.

Speaking to newsmen after taking the jab, Dr Ngong said

“You can see, I just took the vaccine now and I feel good. I have dreamt of taking the vaccine and I have taken the vaccine today. We’ve been at the forefront of the COVID-19 fight here in National Hospital at the Isolation Centre under the able leadership of the National Hospital,” said the medical doctor.

They’ve provided everything we need for this fight. We’ve lost some, we’ve got some and we are happy we are getting the vaccines now in Nigeria.

I think that is about the best news we’ve heard since. I only wished my dad had had this vaccine, maybe months ago or so. We lost him but we thank God, and the fight is still on and we will win.”

You have few weeks to secure the country - President Buhari tells service chiefs

President Buhari has given a marching order to the new service chiefs who he decorated today March 5.

Speaking at the presidential villa, Abuja, the Nigerian leader told the service chiefs that they have few weeks to secure the country.

Buhari also asked them to identify competent officers irrespective of seniority and paper qualification and deploy them to make sure that the country is secured.

He said;

“During our four-hour security meeting, on Tuesday, I had taken the responsibility as Commander-in-Chief for you to go out into the field and secure the country.

“You have got a few weeks to do that because by the rainy season, we expect people to develop confidence and go back to the land.

“So that we don’t get into trouble by being away from the field and therefore unable to produce enough food for the nation.

“I have accepted responsibility for your actions in the field; it’s up to you to identify your competent officers irrespective of seniority and paper qualification and deploy them to make sure that we secure this country.

“We all look forward to you to perform and I as the Commander-in-Chief, I am backing you hundred percent, and I expect you to effectively deploy your officers and men to secure the country.”

I tested positive for COVID-19 - Former President Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that he tested positive for Coronavirus.

Obasanjo revealed this on Friday March 5, while speaking at a colloquium held in the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun state to celebrate his 84th birthday.

The former Nigerian leader said after he tested positive for Coronavirus, he tested negative after another test was conducted on him three days later.

Obasanjo said;

“It will surprise you that I tested positive for COVID-19. I called them to come and test me. They came on a Saturday, I didn’t get the result till Wednesday and it came out positive but I didn’t see any symptoms.

“When they came three days after, they tested me and said I am negative, that is three days after I tested positive.

“My daughter, Iyabo, is an epidemiologist and I called her to explain. She said maybe they tested me at the later stage of being positive.

“I told her I had no symptoms and she said it could be a faulty result. But I tested positive. Since then I have been tested three times and the test came back negative. So, if you want to come near me, you can come near me.

“It is nothing to worry about. When I tested positive, my household ran from me. I told them to stay in their place while I stayed in mine.”

If Nigeria forgave coup plotters and those that instigated civil war, I see no reason why we can not accept bandits' repentance - Sheikh Gumi

Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi has again renewed his calls for bandits to be granted amnesty.

According to Sheikh Gumi, if coup plotters and those that instigated the civil war could be forgiven, he sees no reason why bandits can't also be forgiven.

He said;

“I see no reason why we can not accept their (bandits) repentance and give them amnesty. You ask why do we give them amnesty but they told us specifically that they are ready to drop their arms and they don’t want to be pursued with legal actions after they repented.

“If the country could pardon coup plotters who committed treasonable offences in the era of military administration, the bandits can as well enjoy similar forgiveness even better under democratic rule.

“These people in the bush who have taken arms, they are criminals. I wonder who is not a criminal. Since Nigeria forgave coup plotters, forgave those that killed. Even those that instigated civil war; civil war that millions of people died, I see no reason why we can not accept their repentance.

“Since that is the bottle-neck and it is only the federal government that can give them that leverage. And strangely we found out that they are victims too. They were victims of profiling. So many of them were arrested and punished just for looking like herdsmen."

On the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) calling for his arrest over a viral video in which he was heard accusing Christian soldiers who instigating crisis in the north, Sheikh Gumi stated that he was misunderstood and the actual message was manipulated.

He added;

“Nigerians should embrace each other and live in peace. We should not try to do anything that will cause havoc. I will also call on the press to desist from sensational reporting because this nation is already in flames.

“You should be very careful in what you report. What you see. Continue reporting responsibly and you should not stir the Christian brethren who are known to be peaceful and law-abiding. We have been together for long and nobody can separate us, we should learn to live together in peace.”

Five persons arrested by the Nigeria Police Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos Command, for issuing fake COVID-19 certificate.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Achibong Idonrenyin, Moses Samuel, Popoola Adewala, Wale Aderele and Abdulmalik Ibrahim, and it was also learnt that two others identified as Shehu Imam and Adeola Dalington who work with Sky Blue Services limited, a cleaning service at the airport are at large.

Mr. Bature Umar, the Commissioner, Airport Command told newsmen that the incident occurred on February 19, 2021 at the airport where a British Airways passenger, Michael Osagbogun was defrauded N50,000 for fake COVID-19 test.

The suspects had approached Osagbogun promising to produce a Covid-19 test positive certificate for him. Two of the suspects, Popoola Adewale and Adeola Dalington, who knew the airport environment well due to the nature of their jobs at the airport, allegedly took the victim to one of the toilet facilities at the airport where N50,000 was obtained from him under the pretext of producing a valid Covid-19 negative certificate for the victim.

Osagbogun was reportedly taken to DAT Cybercafe at No. 4, Oriyomi Street, Ikeja where a fake Covid-19 negative certificate was eventually procured for him. He was stopped from flying to London, United Kingdom after it was discovered that he has a fake COVID-19 certificate.

The alarm he raised led to the arrest of four suspects and a guarantor to one of the two suspects at large.

Though the suspects claimed it was their first time of engaging in the criminal activity, Umar said investigation revealed the suspects had been in the crime for several months. The suspects would be paraded in the court of competent jurisdiction on Friday March 5.

Zulum: Deradicalised Terrorists Rejoin Boko Haram After Spying On communities

The Governor of Borno State , Babagana Zulum , has said the concept of deradicalisation of Boko Haram terrorists otherwise known as Safe Corridor is not working as expected.

Zulum said this while delivering his speech at the North -East Governors ’ Forum meeting which held today at the Banquet Hall, Government House , Bauchi State .
Present at the meeting are Governors of Borno , Adamawa, Gombe and Bauchi , while Taraba and Yobe states were represented by their deputies .

According to Zulum , those who have passed through the deradicalisation initiative often go back to rejoin the terror group after they have spied on their host communities who often resent their presence.

He said , “ Your Excellencies, another aspect of the war against the insurgency that needs to be urgently reviewed or modified , is the issue of deradicalisation of Boko Haram terrorists , who have been captured or have willingly surrendered themselves to the authorities.

“ It has been confirmed that the concept of de - radicalization or Safe Corridor is not working as expected . Quite often, those who have passed through the Safe Corridor Initiative, or have been de -radicalized , usually go back and rejoin the terror group after carefully studying the various security arrangements in their host communities , during the reintegration process.

In addition , the host communities where the reintegration process is going on usually resent the presence of Boko Haram terrorists , even if they have been de -radicalized , because of the despicable and atrocious activities they have committed in the past .

“ So the idea of deradicalisation , as currently being implemented, needs to be reviewed because the main goals and the underlying objectives behind the initiative are not being achieved.

“ The best option is to immediately prosecute the terrorists , in accordance with the Terrorism Act.. However, those people who , ab initio , were forcefully recruited but have been rescued or have escaped from the group , should be the ones to be subjected to the deradicalisation process .”

The Governor lamented the delay witnessed in the prosecution of terrorists , advising that state Attorney -Generals should be allowed to have powers in the process.

He said, “ On the prosecution of terrorists , we must make efforts to avoid the current encumbrances and intricacies associated with the process , which usually takes considerable time , by urging the appropriate federal authorities to devolve the powers of the Minister of Justice and Attorney -General of the Federation to State Attorneys- General in order to facilitate the prosecution process.

“ At the moment , only the Attorney -General of the Federation is statutorily empowered to prosecute terrorists , which , quite often , results in avoidable delays . We once again call on the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to delegate his prosecutorial fiat to the States Attorneys General to prosecute such cases in their respective states as justice delayed is justice denied. ”

Those familiar with the matter, said the troops were overwhelmed and could not withstand the superior firepower of the terrorists. The unit then tactically retreated and relocated to Dikwa, which was attacked again.

I am ready to resign if that will bring peace to Zamfara – Gov Matawalle

Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state has said that he is ready to resign as governor if that will bring peace to the state.

The state has been adversely affected by bandit activities.

In an interview with Channels TV on Wednesday, March 3, Governor Matawalle responded when asked if he is intimidated by the Federal Government’s declaration of a ‘No-Fly Zone’ in Zamfara.

Responding, he said

 “I am ready to accept any solution that will bring security to my state.

I am not intimidated. If I know that my resigning as a governor will make the people sleep with their two eyes closed, I can resign. I am ready to do what will bring security. I am not power-hungry. I have been having  sleepless nights to protect the people of Zamfara State.”

The president has ordered security forces to go into the bushes and shoot whoever they see with AK47 - Garba Shehu

Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, says President Buhari has directed security agencies to go into the forests and shoot anyone seen with AK47.

Garba disclosed this when he appeared on BBC Hausa. Garba while speaking on efforts being made to rid Zamfara and other northern states of bandits, said the government is resorting to lethal force.

“The president has ordered security forces to go into the bushes and shoot whoever they see with sophisticated weapons like AK-47. He ordered that whoever is seen with terrible weapons at all should be shot immediately.” he said

The presidential aide also stated during the interview that the no-fly zone placed on Zamfara state was as a result of strong indications that choppers were being used to transport arms to bandits in the state.

“Even in Zamfara, there is a strong suspicion that some of those choppers are being used to ferry arms for bandits and also to evacuate gold and illegally smuggled out of the country, so the country loses everything in the mining.

As you are aware, the Nigerian gold market is a big business and the government wants to do two things at the same time by doing this; end banditry and economic sabotage through the smuggling of gold."he said

Recall that on Tuesday, March 2, President Buhari placed a no-fly zone on the state as well as banned all mining activities carried out by non-state actors. This directive came following the recent abduction of 279 schoolgirls in Jangena.

Ranching is private business, Oyo won’t provide land for ranching - Governor Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde has stated his administration won't be giving out lands for ranching.

The Oyo state Governor said this while making a clarification on his administration's adoption of the National Livestock Transformation Plan which is already being implemented in Kwara State.

Makinde tweeted;

“My attention has been drawn to this tweet regarding the implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan during the joint security meeting, yesterday. For the avoidance of doubt, when I said we would implement the plan, I didn’t mean a wholesale implementation.

“We will be taking aspects which are beneficial for our state. As I have stated on several occasions, our position in Oyo State is that ranching is a private business and should be carried out as such. Our admin won’t be providing land for free to private investors for ranching.”

No big deal in Super Eagles travelling to Benin Republic by Boat - NFF president, Amaju Pinnick says ahead of AFCON qualifier clash

President of Nigerian football federation, Amaju Pinnick has said there is no big deal with the Super Eagles squad travelling to neighbouring Benin Republic for an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

The Eagles are expected to travel to Benin on March 25 for the AFCON qualifier second leg clash.

Coach Gernot Rohr has already said it's likely they will cross the border by boat so as to avoid the bad roads linking both countries.

Amid concern over the trip, NFF president Pinnick believes there is no big deal in the players travelling to Benin by boat.

Speaking on The Morning Show on ARISE News, Pinnick noted that the federation is yet to conclude on the means of moving to the neighbouring Benin Republic for the encounter, but admitted that there is no big deal if they travel by road.

“Going to Cotonou by boat, I do that all the time. When we were going to inspect we did it. There is nothing wrong with exploring other forms of adventure in Nigeria,” Pinnick told ARISE News.

“What’s the big deal, look at the Lagos state boat terminal, it’s one of the best in the world I have seen, so why don’t we use all those things if we have them.

“So it’s just a projection and it does not mean we have agreed on it. We might either go by road if our security report, we have the intelligence, we are also working with the Lagos state government to explore to see what is best suited for that.

“And once we say we are going by the creeks to Cotonou, of course, we will provide every requisite, we will provide the enabling environment for them to go in terms of security.”

Mr. Pinnick also said the coronavirus had halted progress in the country’s football but assured that the federation is ensuring at getting more sponsors to add to the existing sponsors.

“We are still between 60 to 70 per cent (of being self-sustaining) as contained in our last audited report which was published in most newspapers, it’s also on the FIFA website,” Pinnick said.

“Last year, the Covid pandemic affected a lot that we did and this year we are coming back, at least some of our sponsors are coming back and we have some new sponsors.

“So we are looking at within the next two years before the end of my tenure we would have gotten to that promised land of a 100 per cent self-sustaining, and of course with the coming of Motsepe, (Patrice Motsepe is a South African billionaire who wants the top job in African soccer) one of his goals is to make sure that every member nation achieves 100 per cent self-sustaining in terms of funding and that is what we are looking at.

President Buhari’s prolonged silence is tantamount to an endorsement of Gumi’s dangerous statement - CAN reacts to Islamic cleric's comment about Christian soldiers

The Christian Association of Nigeria has reacted to popular Islamic scholar, Sheik Ahmad Gumi's comment about Christian soldiers.

The Christian group in a statement released on Wednesday March 2, said Gumi's comment about Christian soldiers attacking communities and killing bandits in the country is “unpatriotic and divisive".

The statement read;

“If anyone said it was the Christian soldiers who are attacking armed bandits, that person does not wish this country well and he doesn’t want the war against terrorism and banditry to end in victory.

“Gumi’s so-called audio evidence cannot be taken seriously because audio evidence can be deliberately arranged to make a point. Secondly, how can we ascertain the credibility of the person alleging that it was the Christian soldiers that were attacking communities and bandits?

“This unreasonable outburst is not only demoralizing and a plot to divide the Nigerian military into two along religious lines, it equally derogatively portrays the non-Christian soldiers as being not committed to fighting criminality.”

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s prolonged silence is tantamount to an endorsement of Gumi’s dangerous statement. If what Gumi reportedly said was attributed to a Christian leader, the security operatives would have invited him or declared him wanted and the Presidency would have publicly condemned that Christian leader.

“We recalled how Apostle Johnson Suleiman, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, Prophet Isa El-Buba and of recent, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah’s statements were handled by security operatives and equally reacted to by the government. Do we truly have sacred cows in the country now?"

The word militants given to Niger Delta warriors was to justify what they were doing, bandits shouldn’t be branded as criminals too - Sheik Gumi

Popular Islamic cleric, Sheik Gumi, has once again condemned the tagging of bandits as criminals.

In an interview with Tribune, Sheik Gumi said during the tenure of late President Musa Yar'Adua, a peace treaty was held between the government and Niger Delta warriors and the warriors were tagged as militants and not criminals.

He said to him, they were branded as militants to justify what they were doing. He went on to say that bandits shouldn't be tagged as criminals as such derogatory words used to describe them will not help in the peace process.

Reacting to his recent comment on Arise TV where he said journalists are also criminals for describing bandits as criminals, Sheik Gumi said

''I was trying to emphasise that bandits are criminals. They are committing criminality. Kidnap is criminality. Rape is criminality. But I said don’t refer to them as criminals. Why? If you recall, there was a peace treaty between the late President Umaru Musa and the Niger Delta warriors. Were they called criminals? No! They were called militants.

To me, the word, militants given to them was rather to justify what they were doing. So, bandits shouldn’t be branded as criminals too. Don’t call the bandits terrorists or label them with derogatory adjectives because we want them to come to negotiating table. If you keep calling them criminals, you are not encouraging the peace process. If you as a journalist, you are putting oil in the fire.

The nation is in flames and you are putting sentiments and fire to combust it. Is that not criminality? That’s criminality.

So, a journalist can be criminal too if, for instance, there was a clash between a Muslim and a Christian in Kaduna and hundreds of people died and the journalist, instead of mellowing down his report, decided to add oil to the fire.

Journalists, in times of conflict, should mellow down their reports so as not to incite the public. Journalists can trigger war. So, any journalist who does that, that is criminality. I’m not referring to all journalists but a particular case; that journalist that is putting oil in the fire. Am I not a friend of journalists? I have nothing to hide. And all these places I’m going, I moved with journalists. When I was going to Sokoto, I travelled with Arise TV, TVC and NTA.''

“It would be better to lose the food items than to lose lives"- Northern traders insist on continuing food blockade to the South

Northern traders under the aegis of Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN) have vowed to continue the food blockade to the Southern part of the country, in spite of being at risk of losing their perishable goods.

Awwalu Aliyu, an official of the union who spoke to TheCable stated that the aim of the food blockade is not to starve Southerners but to protest against the killing and destruction of properties belonging to Northerners.

Aliyu who restated the group's claim of Northerners being killed and losing properties especially during the #EndSARS protest and the recent Shasha market crisis in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, added that it will be better for them to lose food items locked up inside trucks in Jebba, Niger state than losing their lives.

When asked if members of the union were not concerned about food items locked up inside trucks in Jebba, Niger state, going bad and leading to losses, Aliyu said;

“It would be better to lose the food items than to lose lives.

“You’re talking about losing goods; which one is better, to lose a life or to lose property? Losing property is better than losing a life.

“We prefer and our people will prefer to lose those farm items or goods than to continue losing their lives. If you are alive, you can plant another thing, you can rear another cattle. But if you’re dead, you can’t do that again. Only the living can go to the farm.

“We do not want to destroy anybody. We do not want to kill anybody. The number of Yorubas and Ibos that reside in Kano and Kaduna alone is far more than the number of northerners in the entire south-west, south-south and south-east.

“Also, the investments of Yorubas and Igbos in Kano and Kaduna, running into billions of naira is more than the entire investments of northerners in the south-west, south-east and south-south if you remove Dangote. Our people are only petty traders, shoe shiners, fingernail cutters, wheelbarrow pushers, okada riders and so on.

“Our people in the south don’t have what southerners have in the north. They have farmlands, buildings and a lot of properties that run into billions. We do not intend to touch a needle out of it. We do not intend to destroy anybody’s property. What we want is to have our people protected from being killed.”

EFCC asks CCB to produce Tinubu's asset declaration form as probe deepens

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission probe of All Progressives Congress Chieftain, Bola Tinubu has taken a different turn as the anti-graft agency has asked for copies of the former Governor of Lagos state asset declaration form from the Code of Conduct Bureau.

The Peoples Gazette had first reported that the investigation into Tinubu began last year after the removal of erstwhile Chairman, Ibrahim Magu.

The letter marked CR/3000/EFCC/LS/Vol4/322, dated November 6, 2020 and addressed to the Code of Conduct Bureau, was signed by the then Lagos zonal head, Abdulrasheed Bawa who is now the Chairman of the EFCC.

It read;

 “In view of the above, you are kindly requested to furnish the commission with the outstanding requested information of Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu.

“This request is made pursuant to Section 38(1) and (2) of the EFCC Act 2004.”

A senior EFCC official who confirmed the authenticity of the letter, told Punch that it was part of a wider probe.

The source added that the probe was sequel to some petitions written against Tinubu since 2018 which Magu had failed to act on.

He said;

“The letter is authentic. The EFCC is in receipt of several petitions against Tinubu including one involving alleged fraud in Alpha Beta Consulting.”

Buhari, Osinbajo To Get COVID-19 Vaccine On Saturday

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will on Saturday, be among the key national figures to receive the first jabs of Oxford Astra-Zeneca COVID- 19 vaccine scheduled to arrive Abuja Tuesday.

The Executive Director National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib revealed this Monday at the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing to unveil the National vaccine roll-out plan.

It was gathered that the vaccine will only be administered on the President after a few vials of it are handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFCAC), for analysis over a period of two days- Wednesday and Thursday- after the ceremonies to mark the arrival of the vaccines .

Shuaib said that after the vaccination of the President and the Vice President and sequel to the clearance by NAFDAC, the PTF, Federal Ministry of Health and NPHCDA, the first national vaccination site will be set up at the treatment center of the National Hospital in Abuja on Friday, March 5, 2021, to commence the vaccination of the frontline health workers and support staff.

The health workers would also be electronically registered in the COVID-19 vaccine database and would receive their COVID-19 vaccination card which has a QR code that can be verified worldwide. President Buhari is expected to grace the occasion.

Afterward, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Inspector General of Police, the Federal Ministers, Senators, House of Representatives members, traditional leaders and religious leaders would be vaccinated on March 8, at the vaccination sites to be set up at designated locations, including National Assembly Clinic, State House Clinic and Federal Medical Centre, Jabi.

“After this launch and initial roll-out phase, vaccine distribution to the States for the phase 1 vaccination process will begin. This phase is the vaccination of all frontline health workers, their supporting staff and strategic leaders. Deployment of vaccines to the states would be based on the assessment of their level of preparedness. Some of the parameters that would be used for the assessment include adequate maintenance of their cold chain storage facilities, adequate preparation for logistic transportation to the ward/ health facility, adequate security in place during transportation and at vaccination sites, completion of training of health workers, efficient social mobilization activities in place, adherence to protocol for vaccine deployment,” Shuaib said.

He added that in collaboration with CACOVID, plans were afoot for a cargo plane to transport the vaccines to the states by air while states without a functional airport will have their vaccines transported by road, using vans with fitted Cold Cabins, from the nearest airport. The vaccines are to be stored at the state cold stores, from where they will be transported by road to LGA cold stores.

He also reiterated that soldiers and policemen will be deployed to protect the cold stores which are valuable national assets from being vandalized by looters.

He noted once activities have commenced in the states, there would be strict monitoring of the vaccination by PTF, Ministry of Health, NPHCDA and independent bodies such as EFCC, DSS, ICPC, and Civil Society Organisations, warning that states/health facilities and health workers that are identified as defaulting from the standard protocol and guidelines for this phase of vaccination would be sanctioned.

He stated that the National team would be ready for the arrival of the next batch of vaccines from Harvard facility which is the African Vaccine Action team, a combination AstraZeneca and Johnson and Johnson vaccines, for the phase two of vaccination, to involve the elderly from 50 years and above, across all 36 States and the FCT.

The phase 3 vaccination process involves vaccination of those between 18 – 49years with co-morbidities (such as hypertension, diabetes, lung disease, other heart disease, liver or renal disease, etc) while phase 4 vaccination process would involve vaccination of the rest of the eligible population between the ages 18 – 49years.

The NPHCDA Executive Director urged all eligible Nigerians aged 18 years and above to be patient as they will eventually, be vaccinated as the vaccines arrive in batches due to limited supply.

Also speaking at the briefing the Chairman PTF, Mr Boss Mustapha, assured that vaccines coming to Nigeria are safe and efficacious. He also noted that while the development of vaccines was a ray of hope and a welcome development, vaccines alone cannot be a solution.

He also offered deep condolences to the families and associates of all those that have lost their lives to the virus, stating the memory of the loss of lives remains sobering and will continue to propel the nation in the battle to overcome the pandemic.
