NPA APPLAUDS POWERFUL PEN NUJ CHAPEL FOR OBJECTIVE REPORTING OF MARITIME INDUSTRY

The Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, has commended the Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria, MAJAN , for its contribution towards making Apapa and its environ traffic free and safe area in Lagos for ease of doing business.

The Port Manager, Apapa Port Complex, Adebowale Ibrahim Lawal, made this commendation during The Powerful  Pen NUJ Chapel Press Week, at MAJAN  Secretariat,  in Apapa, Lagos, with the theme - 'The Role of Journalism in Nation Building and National Security.'

 

Lawal, who was ably represented by the Principal  Manager, Corporate Affairs, Lagos Port Complex, Hadisa Usman Shuaibu, stated that "Being new in Lagos I think I came when the road is like a Paris  (small London). Before, Apapa was a messy area.

"I like new things, peculiar things, rigorous task. So I said I want to come and see Apapa. And when I came honestly  it was unbelievable.

"Honestly, if you have not championed it, your resilience, consistency, commitment, dedication in ensuring that the problem that is there, you want it solved. If you have not done that I don't know. Thank you, well done."

She extended the Port management's warm greetings to MAJAN members, as she emphasised the ultimate role of Nigerian Ports Authority.

"We appreciate your importance especially role in telling the stories of shaping the narrative of the Nigeria Maritime industry. Your unrelenting struggles, objective reporting.

"Am so consistent in learning a new thing, each time am craving to see any maritime news on what is new, what is going on,  problems," she stated.

Shuaibu noted the standard practice journalists have adopted which is a contributing factor to the growth of the nation's economy.

"We recommended the role of the Powerful Pen Media Chapel," she said.

She advised that journalists should keep up with professionalism and be objective which is very vital, adding that they should leverage on creating a relationship with the society to give them an hedge.

"Thank you so much for acknowledging Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, the role it has been playing and we would not relent. We would continue doing what we can do.  It is our statutory functions and we would all flex to it whole  heartedly and we are up to the task," she concluded.

The President, Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria, MAJAN, Jerry Aguigbo, earlier in his welcome address stated categorically that  the role of journalism ensures that nations are not fractured along lines of religious, ethnic or tribal and other sentiments. He further stressed that journalists  ensure that nations' internal secrets are not washed ashore, which can jeopardize their decurity.

Aguigbo said responsible journalism informs the public, provides accurate and timely information about security threats, helping citizens understand the risks and take necessary precautions, and holding authorities accountable. 

He noted that investigative journalism can uncover security lapses, corruption, or human rights abuses, promoting transparency and accountability.

He maintained that  responsible journalists can counter misinformation,

debunk false information and propaganda and reduce the spread of rumours that might exacerbate security situations.

The MAJAN President added that journalism promotes national unity and encourage  public discourse. Responsible journalism supports developmental journalism which covers initiatives and projects that drive economic growth, social progress, and infrastructure development.

NUJ:  Powerful Pen Media Chapel Sets for 2025 Press week

The Powerful Pen Media Chapel of Nigerian Union of Journslists, NUJ, has concluded plans for its Press Week, slated for two days;  Wednesday, August 27th to Thursday August 28th, 2025. Venue, no 19 Calcutta Crescent, Apapa, Lagos.

The programme, which is a well-thought out  initiative has a theme, 'The Role of the media in   National Development'. 

It will feature presentations on the importance of developmental Journalism, responsible reportage and national security.

Reputable stakeholders in the maritime industry will also speak on current issues about port operations, especially the use of technology for seamless operations.

In the press release issued by the  Chairperson - The Powerful Pen Media Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ),  Udeme Clement, stated that as maritime Journalists, the  programme will avail  us ample opportunity to assess activities of agencies operating on the port corridors, and traffic management along the ports access roads.

Other activities include poetry presentation, singing competition, among others.

Note that the first day of the Programme, which is, Wednesday, August 27th is not open to the public.  The first day is for arrival of Members, registration and internal meeting of all Chapel members, to review the progress made so far by the Chapel since its inception. 

The seond day of the event, which is Thursday, August 28th will be opened for invited guests and the public, from 11.00am.

The Maritime Journalists' Association of Nigeria, MAJAN, is set to host a one-day seminar titled "Transforming Trade Facilitation: - The Role of National Single Window in Enhancing Economic Efficiency" on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at the prestigious Rockview Hotel, Park Lane, Apapa, Lagos, starting at 11:00 AM prompt.

The seminar aims to explore the concept of the National Single Window, NSW, its objectives, and its potential to streamline trade processes while enhancing economic efficiency in Nigeria. 

The Key areas of discussion at the  seminar will include the goals of the NSW project, stakeholder roles, implementation strategies, and its alignment with both national and regional trade facilitation initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area ,AfCFTA.

 The Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria, MAJAN,  led by its President, Jerry Aguigbo, paid a courtesy visit to the Tin Can Island Port Command on Tuesday. The visit aimed to familiarize with the Command's activities and acknowledge the innovative measures introduced by the Customs Area Controller (CAC), FO Onyeka.

During the visit, Jerry highlighted the strategic importance of the Tin Can Island Port Command in Nigeria's maritime industry. He commended CAC Onyeka for implementing strategies that have yielded positive results within a short period. Jerry stated, "Since your assumption as the CAC, you have taken measures that agents and freight forwarders have been enthusiastic about. We are here to know more about your activities and to familiarize ourselves."

In response, CAC FO Onyeka expressed his commitment to ensuring seamless operations for compliant traders. He emphasized that the Command's goal is to create a friendly environment for businesses while maintaining compliance with regulations. "We are here to make things seamless for people to operate. I want Tin Can Island Port to be the most friendly port in the Federation," Onyeka said.

He also addressed concerns about multiple alerts, explaining that efforts are being made to eliminate redundant alerts and streamline processes. Onyeka assured that the Command is focused on creating a smooth operational experience for all stakeholders.

 Speaking also,the Deputy Comptroller Admi,DC S.O Aribiyi ,and Deputy Comptroller Revenue,DC IS Ofoegbu ,but gave clarifications on the issuance of Authorised Economic Operator  certificate to some stakeholders 

"AEO, like he said, is an incentive, a government incentive. Is an incentive to encourage people that are, or traders that are compliant. It's a tool, used by World Customs Organization WCO. It's by World Customs Organization, which means it's an international-based platform" DC Aribiyi Said.

He said AEO is not only  issued by Nigeria Customs It's a general practice by Customs in , the whole world.

He said the security agencies , including  the police ,the NDLEA ,are all part of the agencies involved online the profiling potential beneficiaries of the AEO

" The police, the Interpol, the NDLEA,  they are part of the people profiling you, the people profiling the traders ".DC Aribiyi stated , adding,that fears of people undermining the privilege of having the AEO certificate has been taken care of.

He said,"So your fears of traders bringing in offensive goods, that one is certain. Because we have people, we have agencies that have their eyes on you.

"So that fear of bringing in illicit goods, that one is taken care of. And as a pilot, in Nigeria we have about, I think we have about six agencies that the customs have profiled and given that incentive called the Authorized Economic Operator.

"So if they are not, if these six were not compliant, they wouldn't have been approved. So the fears of them now getting involved in illicit activities have eroded, because they have been properly profiled".

The Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria, MAJAN, has called on the new Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, to address illegal activities along Mile-2 axis of Apapa Port road, which is constituting a major impediment to trade facilitation along the ports corridor.

MAJAN made this call as a fall out from its Round Table  discussion with the Executive Members of the Nigerian Port Consultative Council,on Thursday ,24 October,2024,at its World Press Center in Apapa ,and as part of its agenda setting for the new Minister after an inspection of Mile-2 road, particularly the bus stop, by members of the association.

The Association frowned at the disgusting condition of Mile-2 road, which is a major access road linking the seaports in the country.

During the tour of Mile-2 bus stop, there were shocking discoveries. Aside shanties seen all over the road, some people were also seen cooking on the major road, and all manners of petty trading took place on a major road giving access to the seaports.

In fact, during the tour by MAJAN members asigned to inspect the area, Mile-2 bus stop on top of the bridge was eye-saw. The commercial activities taking place on top of the bridge caused serious traffic gridlock on both sides of the road. The situation under the bridge was equally the same.

The environment portrays a shameful sight not befitting a major access road to the nation's seaports.

MAJAN urged the new Minister to use her expertise in promoting ease of doing business to tackle the menace of non state actors at Mile-2 bridge.

The Association emphasised the need for collaborative efforts among all government agencies and stakeholders in the industry to address illegal trade and activities of hoodlums at Mile-2 bus stop.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, in his cabinet reshuffle dismissed  five ministers and  appointed seven new ones. In doing so, he appointed Dr.  Oduwole to oversee the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment. 

Prior to this latest appointment, Dr. Oduwole was Special Adviser to the President on Ease of Doing Business in the Office of the Vice President.

Also, Oduwole is Special Adviser on the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) and Investment.

Her profile :

Academically, she has the qualification and experience to deliver on her new area of responsibility.

 She obtained LL.B with Second Class Upper in Law from the University of Lagos in 1998. More so, she has LL.M with specialisation in Commercial Law, from Cambridge University, England.

The reputable personality selected for this important programme is the Chairman of NPCC himself, Mr. BOLAJI SUNMOLA.

The programme; which is a well thought-out initiative by MAJAN to add value to the maritime industry, will focus on activities in the port industry and measures that should be put in place to rejuvenate the sector for greater productivity.

The programme slated for Thursday, October 24, 2024, will take place at MAJAN World Press Center , in Apapa, Lagos.

The event is going to be the best of its kind, as the planning committee members of MAJAN have worked tirelessly to put everything in place for a successful occasion.

The talk-show is divided into three segments to allow robust engagement with SUNMOLA, the guest, who is well grounded in port operations. Maritime Journalists' Association of Nigeria, MAJAN, under the umbrella of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has commended the Lagos State Government and Nigerian Port Authority, NPA, for the quick intervention in averting truckers’ planned strike as a result of extortion and harassment by hoodlums along Port Corridor.

In a communique issued  at the end of its monthly meeting held on Thursday, 12 September 2024, at its Secretariat in Apapa, Lagos, the association addressed issues affecting the State of the Nation and suggested that Lagos State Government and Nigeria Port Authority should intensify effort in tackling the extortion by mounting security surveillance at necessary points along 5 to ward off further incursion of hoodlums.

It stressed that Security agencies/personnel that will mount the surveillance points should not turn the place to another checkpoint of extortion as this will be counter productive.

Similarly, the association also identified hike in petroleum pump price as being responsible for  the economic hardship currently experienced by Nigerians, and consequently suggested that government should deploy measures to cushion the effect of this hardship.

“Government should give financial subvention, provide farming materials to farmers, subsidize transport fare, among others.  Items such as fertilizer, seedlings, herbicides, water pumping machines and hoses, animal feeds, subsidized kids and calves should be made available to farmers as an encouragement to boost productivity,” the association said.

The group wondered where the money removed from subsidy was ploughed. It urges the government to tell Nigerians how they have utilized the money removed from subsidy and what sector of the economy has the money been ploughed into.

Why urging the government to protect the consumers from exploitation,the group posited that Nigerians should hold the State Governors  and the local governments accountable for the current hardship in the land.

It noted that the monthly allocation to both the state governments and local governments are not properly utilised, and this has left the citizens impoverished.

The group also advised government to stop ad-hoc solutions to the nations economic problems ,but should rather come up with deliberate economic plans to better the future  of the country.

MAJAN also urged the government to revamp the refineries  and get them working.  It noted that if the refineries in the country are operational, the nation would not be having the current issues it is facing now.  It therefore urged the senate and the government to tell Nigerians why the  refineries have refused to function,even as government continues to pay salaries and allowances of the workers in those refineries.

Why noting the high rate of unemployment in the country, the group urged government to create an enabling environment for job creation, adding that government should make our economy a productive one and not a consumer economy, as it is presently.

Addressing the now rampant issue of danger on the wheel, popularly called "One Chance," highway robberies, where unsuspecting commuters are lured into vehicle stuffed with armed robbers, the group enjoined the State Government to beef up security on high ways.

It also urged the Police to conduct checks on commercial vehicles , periodically, as commercial buses are  mostly used by these dare devil robbers to  perpetrate their nefarious activity.

The Powerful Pen Media Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), yesterday, August 27, 2024, held an election for new Executives of the Chapel.

The election, which took place at MAJAN Secretariat, Apapa, Lagos, was supervised by officials of NUJ Lagos Council, led by the Chairman, Mr Adeleye Ajayi, Tunde  Olalere and Princess Alaba.

The new officers of The Powerful Pen Media Chapel, who were elected unopposed are 

as follows. Udeme Clement, was returned as Chairman of the Chapel; Asuquo Nuwak, was also returned unopposed as the Vice Chairman of the Chapel; Mr Silas Onuoha, emerged the Secretary. Others are; Mr Frank Odinukaeze, Assistant Secretary of the Chapel;  Mrs Love Ikuku Oyedoku-Treasurer;

Mr Ranmilowo Ojalumo--Internal Auditor; Okezie Success Nnadi, Financial Secretary.

The new officers were immediately sworn in by the Chairman of NUJ Lagos State Council, Mr Adeley

 Ajayi.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr Ajayi praised the Powerful Pen Chapel for keeping the Chapel going, describing it as outstanding amongst other chapels.

He noted that Powerful Pen is among  other chapels consistently paying annual dues.

He enjoined the newly elected officers to discharge their duties to the best of their ability and in line with laid down rules.

He advised the new Executives to organise a press week for the chapel. Also, Adeleye charged the chapel to ensure that its members attend Congresses, as that would be the yardstick  for members to benefit from NUJ programmes.

The President of Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), the parent body of Powerful Pen Chapel, Mr Jerry Aguigbo, thanked the NUJ officials for coming to supervise the election and promised that The Powerful Pen Media Chapel would continue to uphold the highest standards and professionalism in its activities.

A minute silence was observed for the late President of MAJAN, Mr Ray Ugochukwu.

The newly elected Chairman of the chapel, Udeme Clement, in her acceptance speech thanked the NUJ on behalf of all the elected officers and promised that the new Executives are equal to the task and would ensure that the  Chapel lives up to its name, as one of the outstanding Chapels of NUJ, Lagos State Council.

COWA To Become Cynosure in 2024 - Says MAJAN

The Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria, MAJAN,  has said that Customs Officers Wives Association, COWA, will certainly become a cynosure in the maritime industry in 2024.

The reason being that, as year 2023 rolled over with many memorable occasions, one group in the maritime industry that comes to mind on impactful leadership  

is COWA 

The Association resuscitated just four months ago, after over seven years of inactivity, made tremendous impacts on poverty alleviation, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), visits to orphanages, giving succour to widows, who are the most vulnerable in the society and a promise to invest in education sector.

MAJAN as an Association  observed that the programmes of COWA, especially in poverty alleviation and its plans to invest in education aligned perfectly with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, in trying to rejuvenate the nation’s economy to improve the living condition of Nigerians.

Within a very short period, the National President of COWA, Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi and her team moved valiantly, bringing back the pride of COWA and making its presence visible in various Customs Commands across Nigeria. Their 

unwavering commitment in humanitarian work was pragmatically demonstrated at various places they visited.

MAJAN captured the giant strides by COWA, its outstanding moments and unforgettable achievements in 2023, in details as follows.

In September 2023, COWA began raising financial support for late Customs officers' families. The association, led by its cheerful, amiable and pretty looking National President, visited Ogun 1 Customs Command at Idiroko. That visit attracted encomiums and commendations by all in attendance, as COWA

 gave out souvenirs, which included food items to eleven (11)  wives of Customs officers, who lost their husbands in active service.

Speaking on that well organised occasion, Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi : "I am  appealing for financial support for these programmes from our husbands and heads of households. We assure them of prudence and accountability in managing the resources".

The visit was a laudable initiative, as beneficiaries of COWA's smiled home with their gifts.

15 September 2023, COWA led by Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi and the then Chairman, Seme chapter, Mrs Chinaelo Dera Nnadi also showcased another landmark event by COWA, with the handing over of the refurbished Seme Customs hospital, the installation of 15 Solar powered street light, the refurbishment of the Seme Customs Sentry post and the planting of Coconut trees around the barracks. The indefatigable COWA leadership did not stop there, they embarked on a medical outreach to Zango Communities and other villages at Seme in furtherance of their CSR.

In November 2023; COWA, Onne Area 11 Command commissioned Secretariat, Canteen and unisex Salon. Those were not all. The association also donated food items to widows at the Command, a gesture applauded by officers and maritime stakeholders at the Command.

That giant stride was part of COWA's efforts to improve the welfare of officers’ Wives at Port Harcourt Area 11 Customs Command, Onne Rivers State.

Speaking at that special occasion, 

Mrs Adeniyi, stressed  that COWA will continue to embark on projects, which will impact positively on humanity, in order to assist the less privileged in the society.

Stakeholders, who commended COWA included the Managing Director and Chairman, Odest Bonded Terminal, Mr. Chidera Oganuzor. His words:  “COWA is certainly a good development to give officers' wives a sense of belonging and help them.

He also commended COWA for the  donations and gifts presented to the beneficiaries.

Speaking further, Mrs Adeniyi disclosed plans to empower about 1,200 Customs officers’ Wives with skills acquisition, for them to be financially stable by 2024.

Her words :  "The Association is working on starting  COWA Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools to enable us provide qualitative and affordable education for our children. This will reduce the financial burden on Customs officers, who pay exorbitant fees to educate their children in private schools.

"Our focus in this regard is to provide educational support and scholarships to  children through payment of school fees, as well as vocational empowerment of the bereaved Wives to make them self-reliant.

On December 9, 2023, Mrs Adeniyi again championed a groundbreaking initiative with mental health awareness. The programme, which was really impressive

titled; ‘Healthy Wife, Wealthy Life'

featuring physical

fitness, road walk, mental health talk, medical checkup and networking opportunities. 

Commending the impressive turnout, Mrs. Adeniyi informed that COWA would organise quarterly medical checkups for blood pressure and sugar tests

Speaking further, She described COWA members as domestic engineers, advising them to be purposeful, not only in maintaining the families but also in managing family, businesses and extended domestic affairs, giving their spouses needed support to excel in their statutory responsibilities.

Another outstanding feat recorded by COWA was at the just concluded Comptroller General of Customs Conference. The elegant looking President of COWA

 and her team graced the Customs conference held at the Continental Hotel Lagos.

The presence of COWA President became a cynosure recognised and highly honoured by the Ooni of Ife, His Royal Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

The words of Ooni of Ife; "I am highly impressed by the presence of Mrs Adeniyi and his members. You are indeed a pillar of great support to your husband.

...Says debt servicing killing Nigeria's economy 

...Harps on blue economy as solution to debt overhang

Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for signing 2024 budget benchmark of N28.7 trillion into law.

The Association also applauded the two arms of the National Assembly for immediate passage of the 2024 appropriation bill, though it was increased from N27.5 trillion initially proposed by President Tinubu to N28.7 trillion that was eventually signed into law.

However, the Association expressed displeasure on a huge amount of N8.2 trillion budgeted for debt services, stressing that debt servicing is killing the nation's economy.

MAJAN called on President Tinubu to focus more on harnessing the potentials abound in blue economy, in order to generate more internal revenue and curtail excessive borrowings.

MAJAN as an Association, made these comments after analysing the key estimates of the budget as a group.

The Association believes strongly that  the Federal Government can cut down on foreign loans if it looks inward, invests more in blue economy to stimulate income flow for the country, now and in the lon-run.

"A whopping sum of N8.2trn allocated for debt servicing alone is enough to build infrastructure across the country.  This is the time for President Tinubu to focus on blue economy for economic sustainability. We can't go on borrowing and spending so much to service the debt", MAJAN advised.

The Association stressed that the President has taken a bold step in creating a ministry of blue economy; but more pragmatic measures should be taken to walk the talk and achieve results within the shortest possible time.

In the budget analysis,the sum of N10 trillion is approved for capital expenditure, recurrent expenditure takes N8.8 trillion; debt services takes a huge sum of N8.2 trillion, while  N1.7 trillion goes into statutory transfers.

Increase in the budget amount reflected  extra N1.2 trillion from what was proposed previously.

Also, the President harped on more funding for the Judiciary to promote justice in the system. As such, the statutory transfer for the Judiciary was increased from N165billion to N342, to enhance efficiency at all times.

Beyond all these, it is  also the considered view of MAJAN that 

 the issue of unemployment should take the front buner.  We believe that by creating jobs and providing an enabling environment for businesses to thrive would also help in  curtailing foreign borrowings and help build a robust economy.

Government should do more on strengthening infrastructures. Attention should be given to  provision of regular power supply, which has caused most companies in Nigeria to either lock shop or relocate to other countries where there is  steady power supply. The cost of doing business is Nigeria has greatly increased thus resulting in so many companies relocating and some downsizing their workforce, and this further  puts a strain on the already terrible job market.

 The road network in the country should be tackled.  The cost of transporting goods and services from one location to another is very exorbitant. All these are contributory factors to inflation and high cost of commodities in the country. 

Therefore,President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should in the spirit of renewed hope agenda ,ensure that the 2024 budget takes cognizance of the aforementioned issues by making sure that the implementation of the budget is done with utmost  sincerity and integrity. This in our view, is the right path to renewed hope.

The Maritime Journalists' Association of Nigeria, MAJAN, has done a thorough review of  the just concluded Customs Comptroller - General's Conference.

MAJAN analysis of CGC's conference  began with the topics, 'Leveraging data analytics for secure and efficient trade facilitation in Customs operations", which was said to be most appropriate, and in line with global trends in Customs operations.

MAJAN, as an Association, applauded the leadership prowess of the Comptroller - General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, describing him as proactive, result oriented and a goal-getter.

Aside the topic, MAJAN scored CGC Adeniyi high on the schedules for paper presentations and panel discussions at the conference. For instance, the conference began with a retrospective look at NCS, reflections from the past, which was a well thought out initiative to give a brief historical perspective and what the Service wants to achieve, going forward.

Most commendable was that the conference programme aligned with the policy of the Federal Government in its renewed hope agenda; and the policy thrust of the Customs Boss anchored on consolidation, collaboration and innovation.

Panel two discussion focused on;  'data-driven Government, navigating the future of modern Customs  administrations. Panel-three centred on ; 'Harnessing data analytics to enhance NCS core mandates'.

Panel-four was anchored on; 'Leveraging data to create an enabling environment for Customs administrations' and  panel-five gave vivid analysis on;  'Using data analytics to create enabling environment for Customs administrations'.

Also, the opening ceremony brought interesting dimensions to the conference, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, attended as the special guest of honour. 

Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, declared open the ceremony, praising CGC Adeniyi for resuscitating  the important programme many years after it was abandoned.

The Executive Governor of Lagos State,His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the very conspicuous entrance and contribution of His Royal Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, economic experts, members of the National Assembly, maritime stakeholders, the media and other dignitaries, who attended the programme, extolled the virtues of CGC Adeniyi in the successful hosting of a conference of such magnitude. 

MAJAN also, commended the CGC’s initiative in choosing Lagos State as the first venue to start the conference after many years, acknowledging the pivotal role Lagos plays in Customs operations, especially in revenue collection of over 70% annually.

Going further, after the indepth review of the programme, MAJAN sought audience with a reputable stakeholder, in order to get expert opinion. 

In a roundtable interaction with the Founder, National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, NAGAFF, Dr Boniface Aniebonam, the association highlighted its observations at the conference.

In his response, Dr Aniebonam lauded the Customs CG for his exemplary leadership and pragmatic approach.

However, he advised CGC Adeniyi to interact more with freight forwarders at the grassroots.

Dr Aniebonam emphasised that such interaction will give him ample opportunity to have first hand information about their challenges and experience in the field.

His words : "The CGC has done well and we acknowledge that. He needs to meet freight forwarders at the grassroots in their domain without hesitation.

"He should not be in a hurry to leave them. Let him spend time and interact well with them to hear what is happening in the field".

Dr Aniebonam, the Founder of New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, and also the Freight Forwarder General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, assured that the tenure of CGC Adeniyi will remain most outstanding  as the Customs Boss  if he relates more with stakeholders in the maritime industry, especially those at the grassroots,as this will afford him the opportunity to get first hand what they encounter in the field and also the way forward, therefrom "

The maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria, MAJAN, has condemned Incessant attacks on Customs officers while carrying out their statutory duties.

The Executive members of MAJAN, issued this press statement after watching the viral video at its secretariat at Apapa, Lagos.

The Association took time to watch the viral video, step by step and thoroughly scrutinised the content. 

According to the press release by the Association signed by the Public Relation Officer,  MAJAN,  Frank Odinukaeze Odinukaeze, stated that in the process of reviewing the viral video, its revealed clearly smugglers die- hard tendencies  with violent attack on officers, who were carrying out their anti-smuggling function .

MAJAN Executive observed that the smugglers were the first to attack the officers, closing up on them, while the officers shut into the air, trying to defend themselves from the dreaded smugglers, who came out in large numbers to attack them.

The Association also observed that while the smugglers directed their attack on officers, in a deliberate attempt to disarm them, the officers only shut into the air, in order to escape from the scene,and this shows high level of professionalism and character.

MAJAN as an association  condemns  in strong terms recurring attacks on officers by economic saboteurs, working against the policy of the Federal Government in growing the nation’s economy. "A situation where smugglers deliberately attack officers on lawful duty is totally unacceptable. The culprits involved in this attack must be arrested and prosecuted, to serve as deterrent to others", the association frowned.

We must realise that Customs officers are Nigerians like other citizens with a right to life. As such, their fundamental human right must be respected at all times.

We equally condemn the act of Smuggling which is doing damage to the economy and overall well being of Nigerians.

The Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria, MAJAN, has applauded the Comptroller General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, on his visionary leadership in his first 100 days in office.

MAJAN gave this commendation in a press statement issued on its  platform, through the Public Relations Officer, Mr Frank Odinukaeze.

MAJAN described the Customs Boss as exemplary team leader, an experienced  Customs officer who has intelligence,  expertise and modern skills to take the Service to greater heights.

Highlight of his achievements below.

As part of the innovative strategy in reviewing anti-smuggling operations of Customs, the CGC dissolved the  Strikeforce Team on  July 17, 2023, and strengthened the Federal Operations Unit of the Service nationwide. 

"He successfully restored peace in Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents, ANLCA, after years of internal crisis, rancour and wrangling which defied all solutions proferred by maritime stakeholders. 

"He introduced a fitness programme for officers known as 'Walk-Life Balance’ exercise. In terms of training, CGC Adeniyi has performed creditably with the Passing Out of Basic Course I/2023 Cadets, where 81 Cadets successfully finished their training.

 

"Among some of the activities marking his 100 days in office, the Customs Boss pledged his support to establish Customs primary and Secondary Schools Nationwide. He  successfully deployed Area Controllers to various  Commands.

The CGC, on Monday, 14th August, extended a hand of fellowship to Dorian Home in Akure, Ondo State, an Orphanage home for Charity and Social Development.

"He equally expressed readiness of his management team to collaborate with National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, NCCSALW, in the fight against the trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons. 

Recall that the Service in August 2023, intercepted 1,000 live ammunition concealed in 203 bags of foreign rice in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital.

"On Thursday, August 3, 2023, the Customs Boss visited the Ag. Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. The visit sought inter-agencies' cooperation and collaboration to fast-track sustainable working relationships.

"Also, the CGC has gone on a working visit to see top officials of Nigerian Army, Federal Road Safety Corps and Lagos State Governor, among many others.
